Detective Brogan ([info]detectivebrogan) wrote in [info]jh_corporation,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
It was a complete friggin' mess, with violence on the streets, atrocities around every corner, and a cursed drive that kept him going, trying to stay on top of everything all at once. In more than one way he felt like Atlas, trying to bear the weight of the world upon his shoulders.. but sooner or later he was going to drop it. Lose it, whatever. Problems that could be solved with a bullet were so much easier.. in any event, he found himself walking down the hall of the state department, intent on seeking some expert advice and guidance. From what he had gathered from asking around and his own research, Dr. Elliot was the authority in New York on AIA psychology; if she could not help him piece together some of the pieces, no one could. But would she be willing to help?

He stopped just outside her office and glanced at his watch. Not too early, not to late.. it was early afternoon, so he imagined at worse he would catch her with a patient or something. As his hand reached out to the door, he composed himself as best he could, trying to at least give the appearance of being a civil authority. After two quick knocks, he opened the door.

"Excuse me Dr. Elliot, I am sorry to barge in on you like this unnoticed but I wondered if you could spare a few moments of your time for me?"

At first he only saw the top of her head as she seemed consumed by the paperwork lain out befor her. When she looked up, he suddenly wished he had taken the time to shave and clean up before coming. Of course she would be gorgeous.. had to be. Silently he cursed to himself.

"My name is Patrick Brogan, I'm a Detective for the NYPD, and I was wondering if I could talk to you about the violent AIA activity that has of late been a plague upon the city."

By rote habit more than anything else, his badge was presented for her viewing pleasure. Stopping several feet away from her desk, he looked down at her, making a conscience effort not to loom or seem threatening as she regarded him.

"Any insights you have would be much appreciated."

Aeotha looked up from her paperwork and smiled as best she could. She worked for the state, and as such was a public servant. There was no real reason to ask her, because she had to no matter what. Still..

"Please have a seat Detective Brogan." She waved towards a chair and set aside what she was working on.

"Tell me what I can help you with. Is it the one that's been reported on the news? I haven't followed much, been busy, plus I'm not much of a TV watcher." Aeotha smiled pleasantly. Though.. A rouge AIA, a violent one at that. She was a little worried. It always ended so tragically.

She did not seem to mind being disturbed. That was always a plus. Even seemed friendly, too. Was he delusional at this point? Any moment, he figured he would snap awake to find an old, uppity crone seated before him. Might as well enjoy the pleasant atmosphere while he could..

He took a seat opposite her, and nodded as she spoke.

"Yes, the one on the news alright. Although I suspect that there is more than one force at work here. Some of the AIA being attacked can be chalked up to the work of bounty hunters, it's the innocent ones that are being targeted and.. torn apart that I am concerned about. Almost seems.. ritualistic, in a way. What I want to know is if you can help me develop some sort of a criminal profile?"

He wondered as he said the words if she knew what saying 'yes' could obligate her to. Sure, she had probably done similar work before, but this.. something about this just seemed different. Ominous, even. As he thought about it himself, he almost regretted coming here. If he was a sinking ship, did he really need anyone else to step aboard his problems?

Aeotha sat forward, folding her hands on the desk in front of her. "Ritualistically you say? Torn limb from limb?" Aeotha was a little disturbed by that image. While they were machines in all rights, nuts, bolts, wires and metal.. They still grew in some ways. They still moved on through life. They were just as much alive as the test tube babies out there.

Weren't they? When did you cross from toaster to artificial life forms? When did they gain a soul? Aeotha had questioned it so many times, and really it was too much..

But a criminal was a criminal.

"Often times killers will do these things because something like that happened in their childhood. In an AIA case, he or she could have very well been dismantled or witnessed it happening. Though, it's a lot less in their head as on a circuit board that's been fried." The state didn't pay her to be religious after all.

She had so make some sense.

"The common thread between all the AIA killings is that in each case they seem to be torn to pieces. Not just one specific type, either. Assuming it is one person behind this, they do not seem to be too discriminating toward their targets."

Although she seemed fine on the surface, he got the impression that this disturbed her on a deeper level. He supposed, given her line of work and specialty that what was going on had a touching effect. As long as she did not make it a personal crusade, he imagined her thoughts one way or another would not matter much.

"I don't think this is about publicity, as there are not any signs left behind, nor have there been any extravagant claims for the murders. It seems more like hatred to me. What do you think, Doctor?"

Aeotha leaned back and thought about it. She should have been taking notes. She'd do it eventually. "How torn apart exactly? Dismantled piece by piece? or are were just talking about limbs torn from the body? Did they disfigure it in any other way? Tearing the artificial skin off the face maybe? Poking something into the eye?"

Aeotha didn't like thinking about it, but the way things like that could link together.

"Are all of them males, or female units? Certain types? Maybe from a certain year?" She needed more to work off of.

"Hate is a strong word. A lot of human killers do not hate, they just have something deeper working within them."

Well.. she was asking the right questions, anyway. Many of the same ones he had already asked himself. He had not been able to answer them, but perhaps with the proper knowledge and her expertise, she could. In response to her question he simply shook his head slowly and rubbed his hands together.

"Mostly just torn limb from limb. The biggest problem I am having is that the attacks are on AIA in general. Whoever is behind this does not seem to care what gender or type they are. No preference from a certain year, either."

As she seemed to absorb what he said, he wished he had brought some more information for her. Something she could look at and analyze for herself...

"I don't know how you would feel about this, Doctor, but I could arrange for you to see pictures from the crime. Perhaps you could catch a link we missed with your expertise. The choice is yours, and despite my badge and air of authority, you can say no to me."

He smiled at his small jest, as he gave her something more to think about.

"I'm a public servant, I can't say no. Not that I want to say no. I like mysteries." Aeotha crossed her legs and sat up straight.

"I'd be interested in seeing the photos, though you will have to remember I'm a woman, and I'm sensitive. So it may take awhile for me to give answers, let alone talk about them." Aeotha was professional, but anyone who knew her would know she was sensitive, it was best to lay it out on the table before hand.

"How many have been killed?"

"Perhaps I should let you see them as soon as possible then, in consideration of whatever time you will need to absorb and process them."

So she liked mysteries? He supposed that made some sense.. where as he solved cases, she resolved the workings of AIA and human minds..

"The papers report that six have been killed. In actuality, it's more like twice that number." Killed. AIA. Could you really kill something that was created by men? Such a notion implied that AIA were as real as the Doctor that sat before him.. and despite the latest advances in technology, he could not fathom reproducing anything quite as.. his thoughts trailed off.

"I do not mean to press you, Doctor, but as I am sure you can understand time truly is of the essence here. The sooner you could accompany to precinct, the better."

Aeotha liked her hands together. "So you want me to go on downtown with you?" Aeotha wasn't too sure she could leave right then, she had a lot of work to get done.. But then again. Time was of the essence.

"You have to understand, I can only really make you an outline, I couldn't point someone out of a line up. I'm good at what I do and the profile will be good, but not that good.." Aeotha didn't want him to get his hopes too far up.

She wasn't sure she could do that herself. But she did want to help.

"I would like you to come downtown with me, yes." It was not an order by any means. Even if she was a civil servant he was not going to force her to accompany him. He could hardly imagine her doing him much good if they failed to get along.

"All I want is for you to try to help me get into the head of this killer. The confrontation part is my end. I won't ask, much less expect you to point a finger at anyone. Don't get me wrong Doctor, from what I hear you are the best the city has in this field but I don't think any criminal profile is that good.."

"So, what do you say? Can you come with me?"

Aeotha moved the mouse to her computer to wake it up. Quickly typed a quick note to the receptionist to cancel her appointments for the rest of the day and tomorrow, just in case, and then went to sign off. "Well, it wouldn't hurt to come with you. I've just cancelled my appointments for the day. So lets go." Aeotha stood up and gathered up her jacket and her purse. Her laptop case came next and soon she was headed for the door.

Should she have asked more questions? What was she getting herself into?

Aeotha just wanted to help.
