“It’s a warm one,” Neville says, pouring a glass of fresh lemonade.
“Hmm,” Draco replies, disinterested, from behind the morning’s Daily Prophet. Neville stands, in silence, save for the rustle of leaves as the warm summer wind curls around the sapling trunks and quivering boughs of the newly planted trees, as he lifts the drink to his lips. The ice cubes clink against the glass; the lemonade is bittersweet and sharp on his tongue.
“Well, I’d better get back to it then,” Neville says as he polishes off his drink. With a groan, he stretches to his full height; his fingertips appear as though they are attempting to pluck shards of cloud from the sky. Sweat prickles on his forehead in the heat, the beads trickle, their motion stilted and sporadic as they catch on the specks of dirt that mark Neville’s face.
“Yep, back to it,” he says again, turning away from Draco. Draco merely grunts in reply. He gazes through narrowed eyes over the top of his newspaper: the bright morning sunlight cascades over Neville as he walks; running over the sun-burned skin of his bare back and collecting in the dimples that sit above the waistband of his trousers.
Draco rises. Reaching into the jug of lemonade, he scoops up a handful of ice. Clutching it in his palm, he shuffles across the lawn.
Neville is on his knees, hunched over a bed of Merlin-knows-what when Draco arrives. The ice is melting: water runs in cool rivulets over Draco’s fingertips. He falls to his knees. Clasping a hand to Neville’s neck, Draco releases his grip on the ice; it tumbles to the grass, and Neville shivers.
“It’s a warm one,” Draco whispers. Leaning in, his tongue grazes Neville’s skin: “I thought you could use some cooling down.”
