"It looks as though it might eat us."
Grinning, Remus responded with a gentle jab in Sirius’ ribs, "Hush, you. Where’s your Christmas spirit?"
"Sorry, Moony. Terrifyingly large pine trees and warm smiles are a far cry from what I’m accustomed to – being trotted out in front of sneering relatives and enlightened as to all the ways I’ve brought shame to the family name." Sirius forced a wan smile as he spoke, but it was not strong enough to disguise the hurt in his voice.
Remus sighed. Slipping a long thin arm behind Sirius, allowing his fingers to curl around Sirius’ hip, Remus pulled him close. The denim of Sirius’ jeans scratched against the tweed clinging to Remus’ slender thigh.
"Hey," Remus said in a hushed voice.
"I know, I know," Sirius said, pushing his palms outwards and away from his body as he relaxed against Remus, "It’s not the time for…that."
Remus smiled, "No, you’re right – it is time, I do believe, to decorate this obscenity of a tree." He extricated his arm from around Sirius’ narrow waist, before plunging, head first into a tattered cardboard box of Christmas decorations.
"Could you give me a hand untangling these, Padfoot?" came Remus’ voice, muffled by the enclosures of the box and a blinding degree of tinsel. Remus thrust a fistful of Christmas lights towards Sirius as he approached.
"Here," he said. Sirius sighed. His face an expression of petulant reluctance, he grudgingly took the mess of tiny bulbs and wiry garland from Remus.
Remus, standing before Sirius, smiled gently.
"Come on, Padfoot," he whispered, leaning in, "I’ll make it worth your while."
Sirius raised an eyebrow. His reluctance seemed to melt away as Remus fumbled for something in the pocket of his trousers.
"Ah-ha!" Remus said as he brandished something red and white and blurry in his slender fingers.
"A candy cane?" Sirius said. His voice was flat, unable to stand up under the weight of innumerable Christmas disappointments.
His eyes wide, the irises seeming to expand in ever-shimmering pools of washed-out blue, Remus leaned in against Sirius once more.
"Come on Sirius, I’m trying here," Remus said.
"I know, Moony. I know." Sirius hooked a finger under the crook of the candy cane, taking it from Remus’ loose grasp: "Thank you."
The two stood in the shadow of the tree.

Leaning into one another, their abdomens lightly grazing as each breathed in and out again. Sirius began to unwrap the candy cane, peeling the cellophane slowly away. It shone in the glare of the winter afternoon; illuminated by the stray rays of sunlight that fought against the oppressive grey of the December sky and, somehow, had managed to filter in through the window of the front room.
Sirius allowed the thin plastic wrapping to drop to the floor. He slipped the end into his mouth, rolling his tongue around the sugary cylinder.
