Last week we heard from Jensen Ackles, aka Supernatural's (Thursdays at 9 pm/ET, CW) Dean. Now it's costar Jared Padalecki's turn. In Part 1 of our Q&A, the actor who plays Sam Winchester talks about tonight's "Grimm" episode, a guest star he really loves and more.
TVGuide.com: "Bedtime Stories" is a pretty special episode for you, isn't it?
Jared Padalecki: It is. My girlfriend, Sandra McCoy, is on the show. We met on set working together, so it was neat to come full circle. Here we are four years later working together again just like when we first met.
TVGuide.com: On what project did you meet?
Padalecki: We met in Richmond, Virginia, filming a movie called Cry Wolf, which I'm still very proud of. It was one of those movies where everybody came together because there wasn't a whole lot of money and it was just a really friendly, fun experience.
TVGuide.com: Did she play your love interest?
Padalecki: She played another guy's love interest. We didn't do anything during the movie except sort of flirt, but then afterward, back in L.A., we started hanging out. That's when we figured out that we liked each other.
TVGuide.com: I don't know if you know this, but rumors are rampant that you and Sandy got married this summer.
Padalecki: [Laughs] No, we did not. We did not.
TVGuide.com: You're laughing a little too hard about that....
Padalecki: It's certainly not, "He doth protest too much." I just think it's funny because I probably had three weeks off this summer, so I wouldn't even have had time to get married.
TVGuide.com: Well, it doesn't take a lot of time, but if the answer is no, OK.
Padalecki: Yeah, we are not married. I'm not ruling it out, but we're young and don't want to rush it.
TVGuide.com: Do you live together?
Padalecki: We don't; she owns a place in Los Angeles. I actually just sold my home in Los Angeles and bought a home here in Vancouver under the sort of optimistic hope that Supernatural goes for a while. I've been renting here for the last two seasons and I have two big dogs and it was mean of me to not get them a yard.
TVGuide.com: What is your and Sandy's relationship in "Bedtime Stories"?
Padalecki: It is not love scenes. She is actually a Crossroads Demon. The lore behind it is that when someone summons the Crossroads Demon to make a deal, the Demon appears as their ideal woman or their ideal man. It was kind of funny, because Sandy plays Sam's perfect woman.
TVGuide.com: Does she tempt Sam?
Padalecki: She tries. That's part of the Crossroads Demon's MO. They're devils with a big smile and a lot of charm who try to get you to give them your soul because that's not such a bad thing in exchange for whatever they're gonna give you — or so they say.
TVGuide.com: Is Sam seeking the demon out to try to save Dean's life?
Padalecki: Dean has saved Sam's life so much and now he's in danger and Sam's dying to return the favor. We're starting to see him make decisions and do things that he had never done, like going to a Crossroads Demon. He's been on Dean the whole season about selling his soul to the Crossroads Demon to bring Sam back to life, but now we're going, "What, he's getting on Dean about this and then he's doing it?" Usually Sam is a very stand-up guy who doesn't do things like this.
TVGuide.com: Is he a little more ruthless post being dead?
Padalecki: He is. He's getting a bit more like Dean in the sense that he's not hesitating to shoot anymore. There were a couple of episodes in past seasons where the bad guy gets away because Sam won't pull the trigger because he doesn't know all the facts yet. But now we're starting to see that as soon as Sam gets an inkling that [a creature] might be bad, he's ready to kill. We've never seen that before in him.
TVGuide.com: What else is happening in "Bedtime Stories"?
Padalecki: It's all about fairy tales, but the original creepy, freaky Grimm Brothers type, not the Disney ones with happy endings. I actually went back and read some and was quite disturbed. I admit that I got a little spooked out by them!
TVGuide.com: Do these fairy tales come to life?
Padalecki: At first it seems like it might be a copycat-type thing — somebody using fairy tales as blueprints to commit murder — but then we come to find out that it's deeper, in that the fairy tales are coming true and we need to figure out which ones are about to come true and where they're about to come true and how we will hopefully stop it. There's actually a very sad reason behind it.
TVGuide.com: What future danger lurks for the Winchester brothers?
Padalecki: In a few weeks, Gordon, played by Sterling K. Brown, who we love, comes back. He's been hunting for Sam now that he's found out he's not all human. What's going to happen to stop him is very interesting. If you remember, the Yellow-eyed Demon said to Dean, "Are you sure what you brought back is 100 percent Sam?" Keep an eye on Sam and notice the difference between Season 1 and what he does now in Season 3. It might be hinting toward something.
TVGuide.com: What's up with the two new girls on the show?
Padalecki: They're great! I've heard a lot of fans going, "We like the boys. Who are these girl characters?!," which I understand, but the girls are mixing up the storylines quite a bit.
TVGuide.com: Any scoops on what they're up to?
Padalecki: Ruby [played by Katie Cassidy], who's more involved with Sam, is part demon, but she says she's playing for the human side and so right now we're trusting her. Bella [Lauren Cohan] is more involved with Dean and all of her actions put us in bad positions. She collects occult objects that Sam and Dean need to destroy — to sell them to rich buyers.
TVGuide.com: Is Sam attracted to Ruby?
Padalecki: So far, any attraction is superseded by the idea that she's, well, a demon and at the end of the day, demons lie.
In Friday's Interviews & Features, Part 2 of our Q&A: Jared Padalecki previews his (very different!) upcoming film role, compares the two Deans he has played, and reveals the two things he does better than his Superbuddy Jensen Ackles.
Up Close with Supernatural's Jared Padalecki: Part 2

Last week we heard from Jensen Ackles, aka Supernatural's (Thursdays at 9 pm/ET, CW) Dean. Now it's costar Jared Padalecki's turn. In Part 2 of our Q&A, the actor who plays Sam Winchester talks about changing things up to shoot a Christmas movie, working with Peter O'Toole and the best thing about Supernatural.
TVGuide.com: You're really switching gears for your next movie, aren't you?
Jared Padalecki: Oh yeah. I've gone from a thriller/sci-fi/horror television show to a Christmas movie, which is about a complete 180, but that was part of the appeal — to see if after 44 episodes of the show, I could go back and do something completely different. It was so fun.
TVGuide.com: You play the massively successful artist Thomas Kinkade, whose work I find a little eerie, truthfully.
Padalecki: [Laughs] He's the best-selling artist in the world. The movie is called Home for Christmas, and it's about his early years when he started painting to save his mom's house. It's been optioned as a trilogy.
TVGuide.com: Have you ever been to one of his galleries?
Padalecki: There was one where I grew up in San Antonio, and I went to a number after I booked the role.
TVGuide.com: My theory is that there's some kind of demonic energy that makes you buy his art.
Padalecki: [Laughs] There might be. The movie's got a brilliant cast: Peter O'Toole, Marcia Gay Harden, Charlotte Rae, Chris Elliott and Ed Asner. When I read the script, to me it was just a feel-good Christmas movie that teaches a lesson about love and togetherness. But then [when] I got the role and the director said he was looking at Peter O'Toole for my mentor and Marcia Gay Harden for my mother, it became surreal. What a brilliant opportunity to work with actors that I've long idolized.
TVGuide.com: Could you actually talk to the legendary O'Toole?
Padalecki: Peter is exactly how you would expect he would be and exactly how you would hope he would be. He's obviously very wise, confident and passionate, and he's still very funny and sharp. He doesn't want special Peter O'Toole treatment like, "Nobody talk to me, nobody knock on my trailer door." He initiated conversation between takes. It was amazing. I mean, he was Lawrence of Arabia!
TVGuide.com: So this season's Thursday-night 9 pm slot might be one of TV's toughest time slots ever.
Padalecki: It hasn't been easy. Since Day 1 we've had insane competition, and it's clear that it's not going to get any easier for us. But we do have a very loyal audience and we're inspired to keep creating the best show that we can because of it. We always use the analogy that we feel like a very, very talented lightweight entering the ring with the heavyweights. I'm the best in my division, but I'm getting in the ring with Muhammad Ali. Unfortunately, we're up against some huge monsters. I don't think there has ever been a time slot where the No. 1 and the No. 2 shows are on at the same time. So I do the best that I can do and I hope it's well received, but whatever happens happens.
TVGuide.com: What's the biggest difference between playing Dean on Gilmore Girls and Dean's brother on Supernatural?
Padalecki: I definitely have more guys coming up to me talking about Supernatural than about Gilmore Girls. [Laughs] This is definitely more of a cult following. The fans of Supernatural are much more intense than the fans of Gilmore Girls. Fans of Supernatural can name how we killed each demon while the fans of Gilmore Girls enjoy a storyline. On this show, they quiz me! "Oh yeah, what about the time ya'll went to Missouri and killed a shape-shifter, how you had to…. " Wow, they really know their stuff.
TVGuide.com: What do you do in the few hours you're not working?
Padalecki: I'm not a big "going out" kind of guy. I'd rather stay at home and order pizza and watch a football game, play with my dogs, and then go out and go drinking. But every now and again Sandy and I will go out and get a bite to eat, or Jensen and I will go out to a movie or play a game of golf. But for the most part I'm just not into that, I'd much rather play guitar and go to a bar — I rhymed!
TVGuide.com: Yeah, you're a poet and you don't know it.
Padalecki: Oh, that's good.
TVGuide.com: Don't you see enough of Jensen on set?
Padalecki: Not at all. We're really good buddies and that's been probably the best thing about Supernatural. In the last three years of my life, I've spent more time with Jensen Ackles than with any other human being and vice versa. Luckily, we get along really well and we are very similar guys. We're both from Texas, we both love our families, the same kind of music, and the Dallas Cowboys. It's been a huge blessing to work with somebody who is easygoing on set and who I'm friends with.
TVGuide.com: We know he creams you at golf — what do you best him at?
Padalecki: Guitar Hero the video game, and basketball. I've got an unfair advantage. [Laughs]
THE NEXT BIG THING: JARED PADALECKI

His original claim to fame was a role on a teen-oriented TV show; he had an uncredited role in Cheaper by the Dozen; his long and feathery brown hair is known to drive girls wild; and he’s hosted a Candid Camera-like show on MTV. But no, he’s not married to Demi Moore.
Hot Hollywood wife aside, Jared Padalecki could easily be mistaken for a young(er) Ashton Kutcher, particularly on Tuesday nights, when the 25-year-old hosts Room 401. “It’s a study in people’s reactions,” says Padalecki of the show, which is like Punk’d with a supernatural twist—and minus the celebs. “It had gotten to the point with Punk’d where famous people would just know what was up, so instead we play elaborate, scary tricks on random people where someone’s head falls off and that kind of thing,” he laughs. “It was so much fun to host that.”
Padalecki seems to enjoy projects of a paranormal vein. He appeared opposite Paris Hilton in the horror flick House of Wax and stars on the CW series Supernatural, which is currently entering its third season. “I don’t think there’s a harder job in television than one-hour episodic television,” Padalecki says. “We work 15-hour days, five or six days a week, for nine months at a time. But I’m not complaining—it’s allowed me to learn what it takes to keep me going. I was too shy at first to say I needed a day off. But I’ve had a meltdown in the past, so now I’m like, ‘Listen guys, it’s getting to be about that time.’ And they take me seriously because I don’t ask for things that I don’t need.”
This glass-half-full perspective is quintessential Padalecki. Even though he’s built a career out of interpreting the numinous, he is decidedly and determinedly your average Joe. “Calling me normal is the biggest compliment you can give me,” he says. “I grew up in Texas, and I think they’d probably kick my butt if I got too big-headed. I have my prissy boy, Hollywood moments, but [Supernatural co-star Jensen Ackles] is also from Texas, and being around each other keeps us both in check. Every now and then we’ll be like, ‘Dude, you’re Hollywooding out.’ It’s a big blessing.”
Although he really doesn’t seem to need the help, Padalecki also credits his girlfriend, Mandy, for keeping him grounded. “Some people’s girlfriends are the opposite, and they’re like, ‘Let’s go to this premiere or let’s do the Hollywood thing.’ I think Mandy would rather chill out and be normal than go shopping on Rodeo.” In fact, the only time Padalecki (who lives in Vancouver while Supernatural is taped) can even remember heading to the famous boutique street for some shopping is when he won a talent competition in high school and was flown out to Los Angeles. “Part of the trip was that they take you out to Rodeo Drive. My mom and I got off the bus and were like, ‘Yeah, we’re not buying anything here.’”
Padalecki’s first job in Hollywood—the role of Dean, devoted boyfriend to Alexis Bledel’s character Rory, on Gilmore Girls—was much more in line with his down-to-earth persona. He scored the guest part right after graduating from high school, and it became a recurring role that lasted five years. “What a cool opportunity is that, huh,” he asks rhetorically, “to have that be your first real gig? It was such a great show, and I can’t believe my part lasted that long.”
Padalecki will soon appear on the big screen for Thomas Kinkade’s Home for Christmas, which he describes as a project after his own heart. “I’m so excited about this because it’s my first Christmas movie. I grew up watching all that stuff—It’s a Wonderful Life, Home Alone, A Christmas Story—and I just love those cheesy, feel-good movies.”
So much so that he may even watch the film. “I hate to watch myself, I think I’m gross and disgusting, but this movie I’m looking forward to seeing.”
Part of the reason might be his co-stars. Home for Christmas is based on the life of one of America’s most collected living artists, Thomas Kinkade, who is motivated to create one of his most famous works (“The Christmas Cottage”) when he discovers his mother is in danger of losing their family home. Padalecki plays Kinkade, and Peter O’Toole and Marcia Gay Harden round out the cast. “I definitely have an interest in art, and it was magnified by the fact that I was working on a film about an artist,” Padalecki says. “And for me in my own craft, it was great because I got to work with some of my idols and some of the greatest actors of all time.”
His favorite part of working with the industry veterans? “They took me seriously, which was very flattering,” Padalecki says—proving, for the umpteenth time, that he hasn’t got a single “prissy, Hollywood boy” bone in him.
