The old heater sputters and coughs and finally roars to life, and Zegai grunts in satisfaction, like it's one more guy giving him crap that he's shanked real good. "Open that window," he says.
"What?" Shoon stares at him. "We'll freeze." The wind outside already comes through the cracks in the walls -- this little shack ain't much even for the wilds.
"We don't," Zegai says calmly, "and we'll die of the fumes. Open it."
"Hell," Shoon says. "You put it that way." He gets up and fumbles the catch on the window till it comes open. Snow blows in, stings his face. "The storm's getting worse, huh," he says. "We're in a lot of trouble."
"Storm's on our side," Zegai says. "Blots our trail. When it clears we find the river, take a skate down to Konnoh."
Shoon's never heard Zegai talk so much. "Tomorrow, you think?" he asks.
"Maybe."
Zegai lets Shoon come and curl up with him, under their blanket, but he says, "Don't try anything. You're too young."
Shoon blinks. That's the problem? Not that he's a guy, not that he's white, but that he's a kid? "Sure thing," he says.
Hell, he'll grow out of that.
