Sometimes, Axel is ridiculous.
"I'll bring you golden apples from the garden of sunrise," he's saying as he follows Roxas down the drafty hall. "I'll steal you the tarts of the Queen of Hearts. I'll paint you mornings of gold, spin you val --"
"Axel," Roxas says, slamming open the doors to the Abyssal Overlook. Axel shuts up. "You've been watching some guy try to woo a Princess again, haven't you?"
"You can tell?" Axel says. He looks sheepish, but Roxas would bet he's not sorry at all.
"You're subtle like a forest fire," Roxas says. He boosts himself up on the railing, sits there with his feet dangling over the abyss.
Axel grins. "Only for you."
That's a little better, but still. "Cool it," Roxas says.
The weird part is that Axel does, leaning on the railing, quiet. Roxas looks into the dark and doesn't think about that. It's not like this world even has a Princess -- there's no Heart for anyone to be Princess of. And he'd be a lousy choice anyway.
"You could just say, 'Roxas, I want to kiss you,'" he says.
