Light was always honest with himself. He couldn’t afford not to be, as there was no one else who would be. None of his colleagues or friends knew he was Kira. Those that had known either saw him as a God, were dead or had forgotten the truth due to his actions. And Light knew that he could not count on Ryuk for any help. Of course, he had brought this state of aloneness on himself.
So as Light lay on the ground, bleeding to death, waiting for the heart attack that he knew was about to come, he contemplated where it had all gone wrong, how he had come to be trapped in this position, with no means of escape.
Was there one single, fatal error he had made or was it rather a series of choices that had contributed to that moment? He rather thought it was the latter, but if he wanted to go back to basics, if he had not picked up the Death Note he would not be here. Even if he had shown more care in his first usages of the Note he would have been fine, had more choices.
Tracing it back, the first real step that had led him here was the execution of Lind. L Tailor. Yes, that was the real turning point. Not because it had helped L to track him, but because it was the first time he had used the Death Note to murder, to kill someone simply because they got in the way of his goal. From then on, with each innocent death (the FBI agents, the fiancée, Watari, L just to name just a few) he had walked further down the path to this moment, and in the process lost his humanity.
As he felt the first symptoms of the expected heart attack, Light rode the pain as best he could, knowing that death was inevitable and that he had wilfully, blindly walked down the path to his own destruction.
