Original: Bijou (Onyx->Jade) [week 1, theme 7]
Title: Appraisal
Author: Laylah
Rating: PG
Word Count: 200
Summary: "You're worth so much more than that," he says.
"Well?" Onyx asks. "What did the appraiser say?"
"Two seventy five," Jade says.
It's a sign of how much is wrong here that Onyx can't help being angry at first. "You're worth so much more than that," he says. He smiles weakly. "But it's your good fortune the appraiser couldn't tell, isn't it? You must have that much saved."
Jade won't look at him. "Pretty sure."
Onyx's heart sinks. It shouldn't be this way. He wants someone to blame, wants this to be Cobalt's fault, or even Jade's first master's -- anything to find a reason. "You could be free."
"I know," Jade says. "But then what?" He looks at his hands. "I don't know how to do that. At least here I understand what I have to do."
"Maybe I'll buy you, then," Onyx says, and wishes it sounded more like a joke.
Jade holds very still. "You could do that," he says, his voice careful and even the way it gets when he's trying to give a right answer without knowing it.
He'll never love you, Onyx wants to protest. "You don't want me to, though."
"I'm sorry," Jade says, and kisses him. Onyx can't make himself pull away.
