When Rey was young, during her early days on Jakku, she remembered hearing a story about a traveller who tricked someone into allowing them to stay in their home forever. In the particular language used by the traveller, there weren’t really words like ‘the’, or ‘an’ or ‘a’. So, with the right turn of phrase, it was impossible to tell the difference between the phrase ‘a day and a night’ or ‘day and night.’ But as the legend went, both the trickster traveller and the tricked homeowner with the same person, young and old, at different points in their own lifetime. Rey was sure it was supposed to be symbolic or meaningful in some way, but she never quite sorted out what it represented. Probably something about the cyclical nature of time, or the changing seasons or generations staying for far too long in one place. That was something people talked about a lot on Jakku: everyone always talked about how much they wanted to leave or their grand plans for getting off the sandy Outer Rim planet, but no one ever managed it. People lived, they died, they arrived and stayed forever. Day and night. She knew that wherever she was now, it wasn’t Jakku. She had spent enough time with the scientists now – almost a year and a half – to know that their capabilities knew no bounds. From a bombed-out London to a blanket of stars in deep space, the Wittgenstein Institute seemed capable of almost anything. So, making her think that she’d somehow been dropped back on the planet she grew up on seemed almost too simple to impress her. In fact, it would have just bored her. It was a bit worse, she supposed, because it seemed as though she was the only person as far as she’d managed to walk in any direction and she was quite sure she was slowly starving but beyond that she was far too accustomed to the hot sun and frigid nights to feel too put upon. But there was something else. No matter where she moved to, as soon as the day started to sink into night, a hut would appear on the horizon, only a few dozen feet away. Its lights against the blackness of the expansive sky were warm and inviting, and she could smell some sort of roast or fresh baked goods trickling down towards her. Once the house appeared, no matter what, if she walked at all in any direction she’d end up closer to the hut’s open door. The smell would grow stronger and with it the undeniable temptation. What kept her from the house, though, was the same feeling that she’d encountered near the water cave on the island with Luke Skywalker. The Dark side, and whatever it might mean, was disguised in that warm glow and delicious smell. And a part of Rey knew that if she walked through the door then she’d stay in that home. Day and night. *** She couldn’t sit up now. Her skin was blistered from exposure to the sun and she was too hungry to move much anymore. She’d found a dune that provided shade for most of the day and that was the best she could do for shelter. At night, the warmth of her skin seemed to stave off the chill of the night air. Whenever twilight came, she could see the warm glow of the hut break over the mound of sand like a wave breaking on a rocky coast. She had no idea how long she’d been trapped in nothingness, or how much longer she had until she didn’t wake up any more. Some time ago, the voices had started in the back of her mind, taunting her foolishness and begging her to set aside whatever it was she was trying to prove and walk into the feast that she knew was waiting for her. Sometimes the voices sounded like Kylo Ren’s. At other times it was Luke’s and more often than not she couldn’t tell the difference between the two. Maybe it didn’t matter. |
