Pietro was dead, but it barely felt like a tragedy. She was sorry that he was gone, but being stifled out slowly in a cave didn’t seem like a better option. Wanda was happy that she had found Rogue and Bucky, she couldn’t imagine what it would be like to have to bear the burden of life in this cave on her own. But she wasn’t satisfied to sit on the beach and wait until something dangerous found her, and she knew that it would. Maximoff knew it was also likely that eventually, Rogue or Bucky might turn on each other. Only one person was allowed to leave this place. All alliances, no matter how well intentioned, were temporary. With her two protectors so devoted to keeping her safe, though, Wanda was beginning to feel more and more like she wasn’t contributing enough to their group, and so she came up with a plan; she wanted to know if the beach was the end of the tunnel, or the beginning of something larger, just a short swim away. She had to know. As bad an idea as it might be to step into the cave waters, she had to know if there were any secret tunnels or coves that she could get to. Wanded braided her hair into a rope that ran down her back. Carefully, she removed her shoes, unclipped her harness and shimmed out of her caving overalls until she was left with nothing on but her sports bra and shorts. It was only Bucky who was awake now, and he was a few feet into the tunnel, away from the beach. As long as she slipped quietly into the water, he wouldn’t know what she was doing. Her adventure was a caution one, with no light, she knew it was dangerous to swim under anything because she could lose her way and never find the surface. So instead, she moved out to where the cave touched the surface and then went underwater, looking only for something that might be light on the other side. But there was nothing. There was no way out this way. Defeated, she climbed out of the water and sat on the beach near the fire they had built using one of her hand warmers. She wasn’t about to get dressed back into her cave gear until she’d dried a little. She had to get out of the cave and off the beach, but she wasn’t sure either Bucky or Rogue would be willing to give up the safety of this location. |
