I fought Gambit and survived. Anyone else want a go at me?

Thank goodness - the stars, the Force, goodness, god, we have so many empty things we thank - for this respite. I haven't had this much time to think in at least ten years. I'm remembering what I used to like about it. (I recommend you try it, if - as most people here, everywhere - you haven't already.) I've so rarely had the luxury of looking at questions in the abstract - questions with implications in concrete minutiae, as all questions are, but which can be grasped in a more holistic fashion without the misleading loose wires of specific detail. When you run a ship, a fleet, life is one giant tangle of wire ends, constantly smoking, never very far from going straight up into flames.

The nexus between signifier and signified - speech and truth - has revealed itself as being of more importance than I'd had time to realize. Purity in language (its concrete application) is a goal that ought to have been far, far more important to me at home than ever it was. I valued precision and rectitude in so many other things, and let it slip in this one, perhaps the most important: a communication of ideals.

I could use another year or five to get to the core of it, but in the meantime, my basic thesis can be glimpsed by comparing these two propositions from the Han Feizi, a work that really should stand as a monument to beginning with the finest materials and using them to build a heap of scrap:

When names and results match, the ruler need do nothing more and the true aspect of all things will be revealed. … When names are correct, things stay in place; when names are twisted, things shift about.

Yes.

Therefore the enlightened ruler … waits, empty and still, letting names define themselves and affairs reach their own settlement. … When you perceive the trend of a man's words, do not change them, do not correct them, but examine them and compare them with the results.

My goodness, no.
