Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

I always hated doing these things, but what the hey! That's me there on the left. The name's Asher (my parents had a thing for strange names). I'm 33, if that means anything to anyone. The girl there on the right is my almost 9 year old daughter, Amity (apparently, so do I). I'm a single father and I just moved up here from Los Angeles where I lived my entire life for a job. I work in the hotel business and I definitely do not know my way around this place. So if anybody has any pointers, feel free to throw them my way.

Pointers... pointers...

Seattle sports teams might suck, but don't say so too loud, or you'll probably get punched. Tacoma's only 45 minutes away and is a nice escape from the city. If you're working at a hotel, you'll probably want to learn some things about the city

And, be nice to convenience store clerks.

Hey, I'm Nolan.

I can throw out a few of the basics. The typical thing you'd find in a travel guide or on a map. I'm lookin' for the nitty gritty stuff. What are the best restaurants to eat at, preferably inexpensive? Not the ones you'd find listed in those guides who pay people to say nice things about them. But the really good spots that most people don't notice.

I already figured that the Seattle sports teams sucked. Though, I will say that the Seahawks were robbed when they played the Steelers a few years back.

I'll do my best to be nice to them. Wouldn't want to get a shotgun pulled on me or something.

Nice to meet you, Nolan.

Well that's good. Wouldn't want you looking like a total doofus. I know it's cliche, but Pike's Place is a good morning stop. There's a stand that has the best cinnamon rolls in town, no question. And if you want pizza, go to Toscana over on Summit. It's pretty reasonable, price-wise.

Heh. Even those of us from here mostly claim other teams as our own. But to keep things on the safe side, I usually avoid the bars and restaurants within walking distance from Safeco, especially if it's been a considerable Mariners tanking.

Mmm. Shotgun. That's an idea. I'll have to bring that one up to the owner.

Good to know, thanks.

Wow. You mean to tell me that the ones here don't already have them? Perhaps LA convenience clerks are just .. more used to being held up?

Maybe we have one, and they just decided not to tell me where they're hiding it.

They probably do. You should tear the place apart. Find it.

Use your daughter to pick up women who know their way around the city.

I try to keep Ami out of that sort of thing. I never understood men who could use their kids to meet women.

They do it because it works. I mean, we like to think that people are better than that, but they aren't. Just sink to their level. It's fine.

I can't speak for your daughter, but when I was hear age, I loved fairs.

I know that the SPD is funding this huge one that is supposed to start this weekend and go on through the second weekend in November, that might be nice to ease her into the transition?

I'm Ambrosia, by the way.

Welcome to Seattle.

That actually sounds like it'd be perfect. Thank you for that. I'll run it by my daughter later on.

Nice to e-meet you, Ambrosia. And thank you.

No problem. I know everyone that will be working there, as I work for the SPD.

I'll be making fun of them at the front of the dunk tank as I splash them in. All in the name of charity you know.

Moving can be tough and I never did dig L.A. myself, but still, Seattle can be a bit of a culture and weather shock.

Moving is definitely tought. Especially when you've lived in the same place for 33 years. And I know that it's tough on Ami cause she's not used to being so far away from her uncle and her grandparents.

As for Seattle being a culture and weather shock? Yeah. I agree with that one. It's definitely nowhere near as warm. And the rain got kind of old after about a day.

Thirty-three just means your over the hill.

I don't have any pointers, as I'm a new kid in town, myself.

Nah. That'd be forty-three. And I haven't quite gotten there yet.

I guess Seattle is just collectin' out-of-towners now, isn't it?

Oh, no. No, that's definitely thirty-three, old man.
It is. But that's only because we're so cool.

You keep thinking that. But I don't recall getting one of those all black birthday cakes, so I think I'm still okay.

Next September. Gives you a lot of time to plan and buy an abundance of black.

Although my little sister is a few years younger that your daughter she rather enjoyed our apple picking excursion up at this place called Stone Creek Farm. It's a little ways out there, but it's worth it, with all the animals and activites. You should be abe to google it.

They had hayrides, pumpkin patches, apple picking, homemade ice cream and pies, even a kind of splunking treasure area. Oh and how could I forget the pig racing, had her squealing.

Anyway it's worth a try. I'm not a country person myself, but my little sister can convince me to do pretty much anything. I'm sure your daughter is the same way. Good looking kid.

If you or your daughter have a sweet tooth, check out Dolce Patisserie. It's near the corner of Union and 4th, about a block and a half off of Pike Street. Our sticky buns beat the pants off those cinnamon rolls at Pike Place, hands down!

And welcome to Seattle!
