I suppose this was inevitable.

This is my attack cat, Lucifer. Honest. He's worse than a pit bull. Just look at him.

No, in all actuality, he's really just a fluff ball, but he likes to think otherwise. As for me, the name's Shaelyn. I'm a dive master (PADI certified) and instructor. Mostly I'll be teaching classes at the University, but in the spring/summer I'm hoping there will be an actual dive shop or two that I can connect with. I grew up in Los Angeles (which means almost nothing, except I've seen and probably done it all) and right now, I'm really just a fugitive from lust. That said, I don't bite, unless you beg me, and honestly? It'd be awesome to find some people my own age to talk to.

Don't you get claustrophobic diving?

Actually, I find it the exact opposite of claustrophobic. I don't know .. when I'm diving, really diving (not just in the university pool for a class, lol) I feel. Free. But I know a lot of people who do find it claustrophobic. Or just scary in general. The truth is, it's one of the few things I love more than anything.

I'm just not a fan of underwater. Or the ocean in general. It doesn't scare me I just don't see the appeal. But I like that you're so passionate about it, too, you know? That's nice to see.

Perfectly understandable. Although if you ever change your mind about the ocean, y'know, let me know.

I probably won't, but if you ever wanna lay out by, say, a pool. I'm your girl.

Scuba diving? That's fantastic. Never done it, but there's a tiny corner of my brain that has always sorta wanted to.

Man, it's hard to find grown-up people to talk to, isn't it?

Hey, you should give it a try! A lot of dive shops will actually offer a mini-course for people who aren't sure if they'd enjoy it but want to test it out a little bit before actually doing the certification course.

Honestly, I'm not that 'grown-up' myself, but I don't need to deal with the egos of the frat boys of the world. But yeah, I guess it is.

I can't imagine the whole 'breathing underwater' thing. That's the scary part. I just don't think I could convince my brain that it's possible.

Oh, acting 'grown-up' is overrated. But you're right about the frat boy types. Personally, I prefer to maintain a less-beerpongy level of immaturity.

It does take a little getting used to. A lot of new divers actually make the mistake of holding their breath underwater because of the mindset, too. Which is rarely a good thing. But it's fabulous, and if you get to the right area, you wouldn't believe the amazing things you can see underwater.

Exactly! Also, beerpongy is so going to be added to my vocabulary for that. So, if you're not into beer pong, stranger, what do you like?

Sounds like you've probably seen your share of students looking like doofuses while they're learning. I guess it's probably hard to appear too graceful wearing flippers if you weren't born a dolphin.

It's a fun word that I just pulled out of... somewhere. Beer pong would be a lot more fun if it was played with something besides beer, in my opinion.

Oh. I'm Nolan. My top three hobbies are probably people watching, watching the Discovery Channel, and driving around at odd hours of the night.

I dunno, I've seen my fair share of graceful flipper wearers. Me, I try to ignore the fact that I probably look stupid and just enjoy the scenery.

As a side note, dolphins aren't actually all that graceful unless they're jumping up into the air. Well, no. I guess they can be, but I don't think I've ever really thought 'oh wow, that was so graceful' while watching a dolphin swim. In person.

See, if beer pong was played with something other than beer, though, it wouldn't be beer pong anymore. Then it'd be like. Cheese pong or .. vodka pong. Neither of which have the same sound to them.

Also, Shark Week is quite possibly the greatest thing since sliced bread.

That sounds like something I could get into.

Hmm. I guess I never really thought about it that way. Maybe I should watch more Animal Planet. Sharks, though. They move like a knife cutting through butter. You know. When they're not attacking stuff.

Vodka pong. Now that just rolls off the tongue, and falls right out of the mouth.

I love Shark Week. I'm also pretty hooked on Mythbusters. I watched a marathon instead of watching the Super Bowl this year.

Wearing flippers?

They do. Actually, I think they're more graceful and beautiful than dolphins. Not that I'm knocking the cuteness of dolphins, but there's something beautiful in their power.

I never got into Mythbusters. But I'm more of a nature girl than a techie girl.

No, the not worrying about looking stupid thing.

The power is pretty impressive, I'll give you that. But I do like watching sea lions float through the water, too.

I like it because of the science, and because the guys are so damned funny. Plus, a lot of the topics for their shows are myths that everybody's heard of. It's got a universal appeal that way.

Darn! And I was so hoping to get you into a pair of flippers. And .. sea lions? Really? Better than sea monkeys, I guess.
Yeah, see. Too .. boys-club for me. I'd rather believe some of the myths than have them busted. Although it's good to know goldfish can be trained as much as the next animal.

Anything is possible. And hey, don't knock the sea lions! You've got to give a little respect to an animal that looks that awkward on land and can be so smooth underwater.

Who knows. Maybe when I try this scuba thing, I'll be able to relate.

Well, I'm a guy. So I guess it's not a bad thing. But there's nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree. It'd probably be pretty cool to train a goldfish to do some of the same stuff a dog could do.

This is true. Although sometimes, overrated and dull can be better than overrated and narcissistic. Not that narcissism doesn't have its perks.
