Who: Katie and Oliver
When: Wednesday Evening
Where: Oliver's House
What: Being depressed together
Rating: Low
Status: Incomplete

Nights were long. Long, dull and boring. They were filled with Oliver constantly checking on his mother who had taken a turn for the worse. A few months ago he would've been going over plays, doing paperwork or some other sort of rubbish. Now he did nothing. Oliver scribbled in his journal from time to time, but it didn't entertain him much. If anything it made him hate the world more.

What he wanted was someone real and solid to talk to. He considered asking Penny out for coffee again, but he wasn't in the mood to smile and pretend like he was fine. Besides, he needed to catch up with Katie. He'd failed her horribly and Oliver needed to make it up to her somehow. He needed to find a way to stop feeling so guilty whenever he looked at her or wrote to her.

After putting his mother to bed, Oliver put the kettle on and pulled down a tin of biscuits. He settled onto the sofa with a book, idly flipping through it though it didn't hold his interest very much. Oliver wasn't much of a reader. He preferred being outside and doing. Too bad outside didn't like him much these days.

Practice had been long and hard and it had the ability to get her mind off every horrible thing that had happened to her. Even if it was only for a few hours. The idea that she might actually give it up pained and sickened her but she didn't know what to do at this point. Sighing, she stared at herself in the mirror. Everyone had already showered and left but Katie couldn't stand people staring at her and had gone straight to her office and waited for everyone to be done. She didn't want people to see the red, angry scars on her back or wrists. Her bodyguards waited outside while she finished up and she had to admit, it was kind of comforting knowing she wouldn't be leaving this place alone.

Marcus had insisted she keep them and she'd just nodded and agreed. Stepping out the door in a pair of sweats, flip flops and a Puddlemere hoodie, Katie's hair was thrown back and she looked as tired as she felt. Glancing at Gustav and Mike, she smiled flatly. "Let's go," she said, heading towards the apparition point. Placing her hand on top of there's, she apparated just outside of Oliver's placed and headed up the walk. They wouldn't come in. Once she was safely inside, they'd head off and do whatever it is til she needed them to come get her.

"Thanks," she said over her shoulder, knocking softly and stepping inside, Katie waved bye and closed the door, locking int behind her. Oliver was on the sofa and she walked over, dropping her kit next to her sofa. She didn't say anything, just pulled out her play book and handed it to him. It'd give him something to go over and he could tweak and play with it. She thought he might like that. Reaching out, she grabbed a biscuit and nibbled on it. It was so quiet here. She liked it. "How's your mum doing," she murmured, looking over at him.

Taking the playbook, Oliver opened it and started reviewing her ideas silently. They weren't all bad, but he'd make some suggestions on about half of them. Some of them felt familiar and he could tell they were ones he'd played around with last season. Fuck he missed it so much.

"Worse," he said without much feeling. Oliver knew what was going to happen to his mother and there wasn't anything he could do to stop it. He'd tried. They'd hired the best Healers, but the fact remained. She was dying and nothing, short of a miracle, was going to change that. "How're you doing?"

Katie slipped her trainers off and tucked her feet under her thighs. Propping her arm on the arm of the couch, she rested her head gently in her hand, watching Oliver study over the playbook. She'd always had some weird fascination watching Oliver go over Quidditch plays. She used to follow him around at school and vocalize her own thoughts in the common room whenever he muttered to himself over who should flank what. He was the one who'd made her even more Quidditch crazy and while everyone complained about practices, she'd secretly enjoyed getting up early and onto the pitch. It was always quiet and nice and the morning fresh air? It was perfect. Sighing, she watched him study the plays, knowing he'd have something to say on all of them. She was glad, though. She liked his opinion and input.

Grimacing at his tone, she reached out to touch his shoulder but swiftly brought her hand back. Touching people just... it bothered her now. "I'm really sorry, Oliver," she murmured, feeling terrible for him. Losing a parent couldn't be easy... she'd never known her mother but she felt the loss but it had to be infinitely different than losing someone you didn't even know. "If you need anything..." she trailed off, staring at the floor. Not that there was much she could do.

His next question wasn't exactly easy to answer. "Alive," she stated. And wasn't that what mattered? She had to keep reminding herself that. She missed Marcus. She missed lying next to him, even if they weren't touching and the fact that he'd already moved on? She didn't even know how to react to that. "Awful. Nightmares. Daymares. I'm a mess. What about you?"

He didn't say thank you. Thanking people for their sympathy was tiring and it seemed so false. No one wanted to be in this situation and being grateful about any aspect of it was a lie. He hated it all. Oliver was the sort of person who did his best. He never failed. This felt like a failure.

And so did what had happened to Katie and Ginny. He'd failed them both by not being able to protect them. Hearing them scream and cry had been impossibly hard on Oliver. He couldn't keep the girls safe and now Katie, one of his best friends, was broken. He blamed himself.

The guilt Oliver felt over their fate was overwhelming. But he couldn't tell Katie that. He couldn't make her feel bad because he felt bad. So Oliver did what he did best. He pushed everything down deep and ignored it. "Healed. Worried about you and Ginny."

Katie gave a derisive snort when he said he was worried about her. "Don't worry about me, Oliver," she said, shaking her head, spotting something in her playbook that she'd like to change. "There's really no need. I've been through horrible stuff before." Of course, it was a different kind of horrible. Sighing, she rolled her neck, trying not to think about everything she'd gone through.

"It's nothing to worry about." Oliver had plenty to deal with and he didn't need to add her to the list. She was sure Oliver was blaming himself. Like he always did but she didn't know how to tell him that there wasn't anything he could've done.

Leaning forward, Katie tried to catch Oliver's gaze. The scars were healing and they'd fade in time. He didn't need to worry about her. She didn't touch people lately but she nudged him with her knee. "If you want to talk about anything..." she started, knowing it probably wouldn't do any good. "I'm a decent listener."

"I heard what you went through," he said quietly. "I'm going to worry about you." He was sitting there and heard most of it. He heard how those girls suffered and he was helpless to do anything about it. They mocked him, tormented him and kept him awake to listen. "I should've been able to stop them, Kates. I should've been able to do something to get you out of there." But instead it had been Flint. On top of feeling worthless, Oliver had been saved by Marcus fucking Flint. His ego and pride had been beaten down and Oliver didn't know how he'd repair them.

He knew she probably didn't want to be touched, but he didn't care. Oliver turned a little on the sofa and wrapped his arms around Katie, hugging her for a brief moment. "I'm sorry, Kates."

Katie wasn't so sure she wanted to talk about this. She hadn't been able to talk about it with anyone but maybe she could with Oliver. Her mind played her screams. Ginny's screams... Oliver yelling and swearing. She shivered, a fine trembled running through her as she tried to push everything out of her mind. It was awful. She felt the whip on her. The magic digging into her wrists. What it felt like when the man had- Shaking her head, she swallowed and looked at Oliver, eyes a bit glassy. "Oliver. There was nothing you could do," she said, gently. "Nothing. There were too many and- it was just a bad situation. But, Ginny and I are strong. We'll be fine. you can't blame yourself for this."

Stiffening under his touch, it took Katie a moment to relax into the hug but she still felt a little uncomfortable. It was strange to feel so far away from the people she loved. She'd never had a problem throwing her arms around her friends or letting them pull her into a hug. She sort of hated them for taking that away from her. For ruining her relationship with Marcus... Everything.

Taking a deep breath, she returned his hug, refusing to let them win. She had to move on. "It's okay, Oliver," she said, patting his back. "It's okay. It's over now."

He couldn't believe that. There was always something that could be done. The problem was he hadn't been strong enough or smart enough to come up with a way to save them. He released Katie from the hug and put some distance between them on the sofa. He didn't want to make her anymore uncomfortable than she already was.

"So who are you playing next," he asked in a very obvious attempt to change the subject. "You need to work on some of these plays. The Beaters could do so much more if you'd let them."
