WHO: Augustus Pye and Angelina Johnson.
WHERE: St. Mungo's.
WHEN: Tuesday Morningish.
WHAT: Augustus is taking Eloise's advice and asking Angelina out. Awkward.
RATING: PG at the highest.
STATUS: In progress.

It had been a busy day in the Dai ward and Augustus was already up to his nose in paperwork. One woman had gotten bitten by her three headed dog that was sick with some canine form of the dragon pox. A man had his finger bitten off by some type of spider, leaving a green trail of pus everywhere he went and a little girl was petrified due to an allergic reaction to a snake bite. He was in his office with the door closed when he realized that this was going to take all night. He was standing, leaning forward with both of his hands placed on the edge of his desk. Pushing himself back he rubbed his temples for a moment before taking a deep breath.

He felt like there was barely enough room in his office to breathe. The amount of papers on his desk were making him anxious and he really needed to re-organise his desk drawers. Unfortunately his body was thinking something more along the lines of food, which he neglected to have at all that day. His stomach was grumbling, which was quite distracting and eventually it was too hard to ignore. While he didn't usually eat in the cafeteria with everyone else, AJ decided it was time for lunch. He didn't even feel that hungry, but he knew he had to eat something or he wouldn't have enough energy to do all of the things on this list for the day.

Augustus was exhausted, though he'd never admit that. He hadn't slept hardly at all in the last few days and something was making him feel uneasy. His thoughts kept wandering back to Eloise and the conversation they had only a few nights before. She was really pushing him to go out more and he didn't want to, but maybe she was right. It could help, yea?

Stepping out of his office, he made his way out into a hallway. He took the stairs to the floor where the food court was located and walked to the counter, grabbing a tray in the process. While St. Mungo's had pretty decent food, nothing really seemed too interesting to him but he continued to scan the cafeteria anyway in hopes that something may catch his eye.

Angelina was, actually, sort of a workaholic. Sure, she complained about not having time for her friends and family, but she loved working. She loved being busy, loved helping people. After three years of training, she thought she'd be ecstatic to get out of St Mungo's, but after about a week away, she'd started coming back to pick up shifts, logging hours in case she decided she wanted to come back and become a Specialist Healer. Right now, as much as she loved working, she still didn't want that. She definitely needed a break from exams and practicals and school.

Today she hadn't picked up a shift, but she didn't really have anything better to do during her break until Puddlemere resumed practice, so she'd decided to come down and visit the children's ward. Those were the worst cases- the ones magic couldn't even fix. She'd stayed for about an hour or so, then realized she ought to eat something before heading back to the Quidditch pitch. It was still weird for her, sitting on the sidelines, waiting for someone to get hurt, rather than gearing up and tearing off on a broom herself. But she was getting to do what she loved and still be a part of the game. Even though she got a weird pang of missing it sometimes, she really couldn't have asked for a better job.

So she checked her watch and headed down the cafeteria. The food wasn't great but it was quick and easy, and she'd get to see a few familiar faces. She waved hello to a few of her friends, Trainees that hadn't passed their final practical exams yet. And then she saw Augustus Pye. Poor Augustus. He was a brilliant Healer but since his divorce... he just hadn't been the same. Angelina felt awful for him, that wife of his running off with some Quidditch player. Or at least she thought that was what had happened. She couldnt' be sure. Either way, she knew Augustus buried himself in his work even more than she did, and she always made it a point to say hello, ask him how his day was.

"Augustus!" she said brightly, waving at him as she grabbed an apple and a sandwich off of the line. She didn't bother with a tray, just crossed over to where Augustus was standing. "Haven't seen you in a while. How are you?"

To say that Augustus was happy about be in the papers was an absolute lie. He wasn't even sure how he ended up there. Perhaps when Kyra commented on his journal just to get a rise out of him- that was probably it. People had been bringing it up all day, staring at him even. He didn't like nor appreciate the attention and frankly, he hopes something would happen so that the next big gossip story would cover this completely. He wasn't even that interesting and that happened so long ago, so why was it in the papers now anyhow?

Though he thought about his rather pathetic life a pretty large amount of the time, he didn't bring it up to other people. In fact, when people got those sympathetic eyes and asked him how he was doing, patting him on the shoulder and all that, he wouldn't even say much more than a few words. Reckless. He mentally noted to ward Kyra against the rest of his journal entries for awhile. Or forever.

He glanced around at the food settling on a ham sandwich and some pumpkin juice. Nothing fancy. When he made his way to the line he heard his name being called. Here we go again. He turned to see none other than Angelina Johnson waving his way. Again, his mind went to his conversation with Eloise the other night. It was almost a coincidence that he saw Angelina there so soon after his and Eloise's conversation. He scratched the back of his head, his lips only curling up a little when she approached him.

"Oh. Hello Angelina. What brings you here today?" He started to walk towards the cash register with her, holding his tray tightly and stiffly against his abdomen. "Er. Well just really busy. How are you?" He looked down at his hands and then looked back up at Angelina. "Er. You planning on staying? Want to take a seat?" Sure, Angelina was a really nice beautiful woman, but why did he just do that? He was probably coming off exceptionally creepy today, which was in his mind, something that happened all too often. He swore Eloise was doing something to him because he never, ever had lunch in the cafeteria with other people. Ever. He was antisocial in that way, really. And he didn't like people that much.

"Food brings me here," Angelina laughed, passing a few coins over to the lady at the till. "But other than that, I was up in the children's ward. Had a break from practice for a bit. Thought it'd be nice to get out of the rain." Rainy practices were the worst, especially the cold, grey drizzle that had been coming down all day. "You know, they really ought to get them some new toys. They've had those in there since I started training. I swear I mend up a teddy bear at least every time I visit."

She glanced at Augustus, noting his defensive body position and wondering why on earth he was so stiff. She just shrugged it off and smiled again. "Sure, I'd love some company," she said, leading the way to an empty table once Augustus had paid for his lunch. She noticed several people glancing over at Augustus and frowned. That stupid paper. It was like they had nothing to do other than ruin people's lives. Katie was a wreck because of it, and now poor Augustus, having his divorce as gossip fodder. She wasn't going to mention it.

Instead she unwrapped her sandwich and took a small bite. "So, how have things been today? It seems quieter than usual." Maybe it was the weather. "I had a broken arm today- bone went all the way through the skin and was poking out. But other than that, nothing all that exciting." So Angelina might be nice and pretty, but she was certainly not squeamish in the least, not after so many years seeing every kind of injury and malady imaginable. Weird cases you'd had that day was just what people talked about during lunch at a hospital. If it was weird Angelina didn't notice.

Augustus thought it was nice that she went to the children's ward. He went there sometimes too. He really liked kids, which probably seemed weird since he was so awkward around adults. Honestly, they just saw the world so much simpler. He nodded at her statement about the toys. "I know. I keep telling them that. Maybe I'll just go down to Diagon and get them some myself." The poor kids were stuck there all of the time, some of them didn't even have family after they lost their parents in the way. It broke his heart.

He sat down across from her, pulling out his sandwich and taking a bite. Even eating he looked stiff, sort of unnatural. It didn't help that all these people were staring at him. He appreciated that she wasn't trying to make him talk about his ex-wife. He didn't talk about it a lot but for some reason the prophet said he had, which was kind of strange. Actually, him being in the prophet at all was strange. It made him really uncomfortable.

He thought a moment and decided not to complain about paperwork. He did that too much. "It's not too crazy, though I think people are purposely putting themselves in harms when around dangerous animals." Sometimes the stories you heard around the hospital were hilarious, other times they were all too sad. Fortunately, while his ward was full of lots of suffering patients, as long as they got to the hospital in time most of them were okay. "Did have a man that had his hand bitten off. He brought in the animal that did it, thinking we'd be able to retrieve it for him and re-attach it."

"It makes me so mad," Angelina sighed, shaking her head. "They hold these stupid galas all the time and no one ever thinks to give to the hospital. We only treat these people and save their lives, but when they're well, they never think of the people here, or how we need new supplies. So frustrating." She toyed with her apple, rolling it agitatedly between her hands.

"I mean, that gala last month, for all the Quidditch teams. It didn't even go to charity! And do you know how much some of those teams and players make? They certainly don't need any handouts. The Falcon/Pride match this weekend is almost completely sold out, not even because it'll be an even match, but because everyone wants to see if the Captains kill each other. And those teams are completely banking on that. Advertising, merchandise." She realized, a little abruptly that she was ranting about Quidditch players, probably something Augustus wasn't too keen to talk about. "I just bet not one sickle will go to charity, especially not this hospital, and it's sad."

Angelina brightened a bit at his story, as unfortunate as it was. She missed hearing crazy stories- that was what got you through a long shift here. "Oh, what a poor thing, that's terrible." she said, one hand coming to her mouth in concern. "What sort of animal was it?"

Augustus understood her frustration, though fortunately he didn't have to work with quidditch players much clearly that was Kyra's Specialty. Either way, she had a point. "Frustrating it is indeed. Perhaps I'll drop by Freddie's office today and see what I can do about the toys."

He smiled at her, which was odd, but she was really intense about this. He cleared his throat after having another bite of his sandwhich, "You know it probably wouldn't be a bad idea for a representative from the hospital to go and try to make a deal with them. Have so much money get donated for every injury during each match, that would probably make them see how that correlates directly and the hospital would get some money out of it." He shrugged, he donated back to the hospital every year but he wasn't very good at that public relations kind of thing.

Scratching his head, he bit down on his sandwich again, feeling a bit more comfortable around Angelina. She was a really nice bird, he could tell. "I know, I think we managed to patch him up well enough." He folded his and began fiddling his thumbs but continued, "Oh, er, it was a Ashwinder. Not sure how he angered it enough to bite his hand off. And he burned his other hand carrying it all the way here. Poor bloke was in shock by the time he got here."

He hadn't looked at her straight in the eye most of their conversation, but he was studying her now. So this was the type of girl Eloise wanted him to end up with? 'Course Angelina was beautiful and sweet and kind but Eloise was also all of these things. He sat up a bit straighter in his chair, expecting that the next thing he was going to say would probably be incredibly awkward. "So. Er. This may come off a bit strange but what are you doing Thursday night?" He rubbed the back of his head as he asked her. Honestly he couldn't even believe he was doing this, but something or someone had to end his infatuation with Eloise before she flat out told him that he was too much for her to handle.

Angelina grinned at him, thrilled by that prospect. "That's a brilliant idea, Augustus! Absolutely brilliant. I'll talk to Katie about it. I'm sure Puddlemere will get behind it. Not sure about Falmouth, they'd probably go bankrupt. But Katie's dating Flint," she shrugged. "So maybe. And Ginny's with the Harpies and Davies with Portree. That's three, possibly four teams we could get on board pretty easily. Sort of lucky everyone from school went to separate teams." Her brain was already ticking and she wished she'd brought a notebook to scratch out her ideas. "That really is so clever. I wish I'd thought of it."

She shook her head at his description of his patient, looking a little aghast. "I hope he turns out alright. People without proper training just shouldn't mess without magical creatures. It would make our jobs so much easier. And their lives much less painful." The same went for potions, experimental charms. Basically any magical tinkering.

If his next question was awkward at all, Angelina didn't even notice. Of course she'd noticed that Augustus rarely met her gaze, but he was always quiet and a little shy. So when she asked her what she was doing Thursday, it did surprise her, but in a good way. "Oh, well, actually now that you mention it, Will Bradley is throwing a party. I'm still not sure about it, but Eloise Midgen is supposed to be cooking. I don't know if you know her but she's such a sweet girl. She got teased a lot in school but she's just lovely now." She tapped her apple, considering for a moment, then grinned over at Augustus. "We should go! Come with me."

Augustus felt rather proud of himself that Angelina was so excited about his idea. Of course, he wasn't good at carrying out those sort of plans, but he could be pretty good at brainstorming if he thought about it hard enough. "I suppose that would be a good start. It's certainly better than nothing." While there was no guarantee an idea like that would take off, it was always nice to think it might. The hospital was in serious need of donations.

He nodded at her reply about the patient. "I agree. Of course, my opinion may be a tad biased. I am the one that needs to take care of it on this end." He chuckled a bit. While people could be incredibly stupid, he did really enjoy his job.

When Angelina brought up Eloise, he stiffened. Just the thought of her made this whole lunch-thing (or whatever it was) feel sort of wrong. He knew she wasn't interested in him like that, but deep down he was well aware that she was the only one he wanted and this whole facade was going to get old, fast. At the same time, he really did enjoy Angelina's company. She was very sweet and beautiful. If he was being forced to go out of his comfort zone and take someone on a date, at least it was her.

Eloise would be cooking? That was strange. She hadn't mentioned anything. All of the sudden there was a huge knot in stomach but he ignored it and pushed himself through the awkwardness he felt at the whole conversation. "Yes, I know Eloise. She's, er, she's great." He pushed his tray away from him and leaned back in his seat looking at her. "I mean. That would be good yea. Would you like me to pick you up?" He mostly expected her to say she was busy and was surprised when she invited him to the party. Parties weren't really his thing, but maybe it would be fun. Plus, Eloise would be there and Angelina seemed like she'd be fun though he highly doubted he'd be able to keep her entertained for very long.
