Things had been strange lately. Death and destruction was everywhere. Curfews and all that shite? It was fucking crazy. It felt like the bloody war all over again. At least, what he'd heard about it. Clint had skipped out to Spain for that little event. Still, he didn't like being told what to do. Heading over to Marcus's, he dropped a quick kiss on Daphne's lips. "Love you," he said, nuzzling her ear. "I'll be back later." Course, he didn't mention he was going over to ogle a hot nanny or get drunk and possibly smoke a few cigars. But, Daph was fairly easy going about the drinking and smoking. He didn't think it was prudent to bring up the hot, sexy nanny. "I'll be back later. Checking in on Marcus and all that." He stared at her for a moment, still unable to believe this was his life. Kissing her again, he tugged gently on her curl. "Don't wait up." One more kiss and he was gone, heading out to Flint's. He hoped she didn't mind but Marcus did just lose his brother... He apparated just outside of Marcus's new building and headed up. Pushing the door open, he went inside, not bothering to knock. "Hey," he said, catching sight of Marcus staring at something. His eyes followed his mate's and his mouth nearly dropped open.

Clint just stared. Really. Holy fucking shite. He liked blondes. Clearly, he married one but fucking hell. Her tits were bloody perfect. Tilting his head, he watched as she bent over. Holy hell. Her body was just- holy shite. She wasn't overly tall, just a bit shorter than Daph, really but fucking hell. She was toned and bloody gorgeous. His head tilted to the side as he watched her play with Sam. "She's going to be living here?" he asked, voice low, walking over to wear Marcus was leaning against the dining table. Sam and the Nanny were in the living room. Laughing and giggling. Fucking hell. "And Bell's okay with this?" He couldn't believe that Katie Bell would be okay with a nanny that looked like that. Course, not like she and Flint were official or anything. And, well, it was Bell. She probably wouldn't say anything anyway. Too nice or some shite. But fuck. Those were some tight pants. Sam seemed to like her, though. That was a plus. If Marcus wanted an argument? Well, hell. He'd have one right there. Shite. Tossing back a drink, he admired her slim waist and just... she should run around naked. That'd be asking too much, though. Really, if she was going to be a live-in? Marcus was in trouble. Suddenly, he had the feeling that it was going to be an amusing couple of months. Watching him try not to fuck that hot piece of arse. Salazar.

"Well," he said, shaking his head, sipping his whisky. "Gotta hand it to you, mate. You lucked out." Clint glanced over at Marcus and grinned. "I lost my virginity to my nanny. She was a redhead. Well, she was really Lyssy's nanny. Taught me things no thirteen year old should ever know."

Marcus had hired the nanny based solely on her CV and references. He hadn't had time to interview himself, but his assistant up at Falmouth had and had relayed the information to Marcus. And so he'd hired her. There was a slight language barrier since she was from Switzerland, but she was well educated and had worked with several respected pureblood families in her area as an au pair for years. Marcus had owled her to see if she could meet him at his house to meet Sam that evening and she'd agreed. He'd been expecting a somewhat homely looking girl or something. Someone who worked with children because they knew they'd never have a man or family of their own. But what had appeared was anything but homely.

Brigitte was ridiculous. She was average height, had the worlds smallest waist, and the nicest fake tits he'd ever seen. Marcus had always had a thing for blondes and this girl was not an exception. She was stunning. And Sam seemed to love her so far which was definitely a plus. But she only made him miss Katie. He hadn't left things very well with her. But he just couldn't deal with the thought that they might be related. He could deal with everything else but that? That was too much. Katie was the only good thing in his life at the moment and the fact that there was a chance that that was all fucked up too was just...it was devastating. But he was trying not to dwell on it. Until they found out who her dad was, there wasn't much Marcus could do about the situation.

So in the hopes of not thinking about it for a bit, he'd invited Clint over to see the Nanny. He knew Clint preferred redheads...but any man could appreciate the blonde currently playing with Sam. And when Clint had arrived, Marcus had wasted no time with handing Clint a drink. "Bell doesn't know yet," he said in response. "And we haven't worked out contractual details as far as living. Not until I get a final word on custody," he said, tossing back his glass of whiskey before pouring himself another one. At Clint's comment about his own nanny, Marcus couldn't help but laugh. "Well, let's hope Sam doesn't have that same experience. And her references were surprisingly good. Kids fucking love her apparently..." he said, still a bit caught off guard by her appearance. He never would have expected someone like that. "She's from Switzerland..." he said as he watched her interact with Sam. It wasn't even an important point but he'd felt the need to say it anyway.

Clint was loving this. Seriously. He had no fucking clue how Marcus got himself into situations like this but fuck if it wasn't the most entertaining fucking thing in his life right now. He finished off his drink, holding it out for Marcus to pour another one. Sam caught sight of him and ran over, throwing her little arms around his legs. "UNCLE CLINT!" she said, happily. Setting his drink down, he picked up the little twerp and gave her a hug. Poor kid. Sam was rambling on about something, trying to pat his hair down before squirming out of his arms and running back to the world's sexiest blond.

When Sam was out of ear shot, Clint tilted his head to the side, studying the tiny waist. "My fucking hands would touch if I put them around her..." He shook his head. "Switzerland...right. Well." He clinked his glass to Marcus's. "Congrats on finding the world's sexiest nanny." Fucking hell. "Can I be here when Bell meets her?"

Brigitte tossed her hair over her shoulder, revealing a slim neck that lead to lovely cleavage. "Holy fucking hell..." he grinned, taking a long drink. Bell not knowing made this just... perfect. Really fucking perfect. "You're going to be in so much trouble." Brigitte bent over, her shorts riding up just a little. "Christ. Makes you just want to shove her up against that window and fuck the shite out of her." He shook his head, so incredibly envious that Flint got to look at that everyday. "I can't even begin to imagine seeing that every day..."

This was such a nice break from the huge fucking mess that Marcus's life had turned into. It was almost like old times. Drinking with Clint while checking out and making inappropriate comments about a hot witch. When Sam ran up to Clint, Marcus couldn't help but smile. He fucking loved Sam. It was so hard to think of her as his. He just couldn't wrap his head around being completely responsible for her 24/7. It was too obscure of a concept for him to grasp at this point. He was just going to try to take it all one step at a time or something. That might work, right? It would have been easier with Katie by his side but, given the current situation, that clearly wasn't possible just yet. Still, it was something to hope for.

It wasn't like Marcus had gone out of his way to find a hot nanny. "Life just has a way of throwing these things at me..." he said before taking another drink. "It's fucking exhausting. This couldn't have all happened before Katie?" he asked, frustrated. Because really? Marcus would have fucked the shite out of this girl and it would have been absolutely amazing. But all he could think about was Katie Bell and it was driving him crazy. "And no. You cannot be here when Katie finds out. Fuck. I don't even want to be here when Katie finds out," he said. That was just going to be....a fucking disaster. But relationships were about trust, right? And he hadn't been with anyone else in ages, despite the fact that he and Katie hadn't added titles to anything. He had faith that she'd trust him on this. He didn't plan on fucking things up with Bell. Not when he'd already been handed a second chance with her.

Though he couldn't help but watch as Brigitte tossed her hair. She looked up and smiled brightly at Marcus and he had to take another sip of his whiskey to keep from smiling back. This was awful. "Katie's going to fucking kill me..." he said as he watched how perfectly her toned arse filled her shorts out. This was just insane. "Maybe I should tell her it's not working. I can find some old batty witch, right?" he asked Clint, though didn't take his eyes off of Brigitte just yet.

"You're in so much fucking trouble," Clint said, grinning when Brigitte smiled at Marcus. It was fairly obvious that she thought her new boss was a bit good looking. Clint couldn't stop the grin. The whole idea of this mess was just... too ridiculous. "Well," he said, glancing at Marcus. "I'll be sure to stop in and check on Sam a bit more often and all that." Clint glanced back tilting his head. Sam pulled on Brigitte's shirt, exposing a very nice, low-cut bra. His grin broadened. "Definitely going to stop in." Fuck. If this had been four months ago... one of them would've been fucking her while the other got head. Life was so unfair sometimes. "Not like you're anything official with Bell," he said, nearly spitting out his whisky when she did some weird, flexible bending thing with her body.

"No titles... no commitment," he said, grinning. "If I wasn't married... shite." He shook his head, downing the last of his drink and reaching for the bottle. At this rate? Well, he'd be sodding pissed by the time he got back home. Hmm. Daphne might not like the idea of him staring and drinking at a hot Swiss girl. It was better than touching, right? He could look. That meant shite. For a moment, Clint thought Marcus meant he was going to tell Katie it wasn't working but then... he realized his mate was referring to the goddess in the living room. "No," Clint said, vehemently. "You can hire her. Let her move in and watch her prance around in a towel and hopefully not much more."

"Holy fuck..." he whispered. Hell, you'd think he hadn't seen someone that fucking hot... well, ever. Seriously. He was going home to fuck his wife and forget that he'd ever seen this perfect creature. "I bet she has a huge twat from being fucked by too many men." Course, he said this all rather disappointed but there was no way that beautiful creature hadn't been tossed over the side of a bed, table, counter... whatever and just fucked mercilessly. "You don't want a batty, old witch. You want this... whatever she is to raise Sam. She'll teach her all the right things. How to be a beautiful, pureblood society girl."

When Clint said that Marcus was in trouble, he couldn't help but nod his head in agreement. He knew he was in trouble. Katie had put up with a lot from him so far but this? This was going to cause issues. But she really had come with great references and qualifications. And Sam loved her. What the fuck was he supposed to do other than hope that Katie trusted him? When Clint said he'd stop by more, Marcus couldn't help but smile lightly. "She loves you so...that would be really great. Because I don't know what the fuck I'm doing," he said honestly.

He thought over what Clint was saying about Katie. There really weren't any titles. No real commitment. He could technically do whatever he wanted with this new nanny and not have to feel guilty about it. But he would feel guilty. He loved Katie, no matter her blood status. "This really is just....a horrible idea," he finally managed to respond to Clint. But in the end, it wasn't about Marcus and Katie. It was about Sam. And this girl was highly recommended and Sam seemed to really like her.

He turned to Clint, not really wanting to think about huge twats and how many people had fucked the shite out of his new nanny. It was just....a few months ago he would have been willing to get in line. But now? Not so much. "I don't want Sam to end up like her," he said with a laugh. "Getting stared at by perverted old men? Not exactly the future Sam deserves," he said as he took another long drink of his whiskey. Fuck. He was going to end up so drunk after all of this. "I just wish Katie knew who her father was," he said with an annoyed sigh. "I miss her already and that's so fucking ridiculous because its only been two days..."

Clint had really meant that he wanted to come over and look at the nanny more. However, he did love Sam. She was a sweetheart and fucking hilarious and entirely too smart for her own damn good. She had every man she encountered wrapped around her little finger. It was hysterical, really. Nobody could say no to her. Course, she was adorable, so, he really didn't see that as a problem. "You'll do alright," Clint said, shrugging. "Nanny's are there for the actual child raising part and you can... I don't know. Tuck her in or some shite." Marcus had a lot on his plate right now and adding a kid to the mix was just fucking insane. "Besides. She's probably not that much trouble right now... it's when they get older and boys are interested in them is when the real problems start. Least... that's how it was with Lyssy."

"It's definitely a shite idea," Clint said, nodding. "Especially if you want to keep whatever it is you have going with Bell." Rolling his neck, he straightened up, half-drunk from the rapid succession of firewhiskys and... well that was it. He wasn't even sure what number he was on but it was Friday and there was no practice tomorrow so right now? Right now, he didn't give a fuck. "I'm sure you could easily find an old woman who was just as nice and Sam liked just as much. Course... that'd be... less fun."

Marcus's words caught Clint off guard and he nearly puked in his mouth at the sentiment coming out of them. He stared at his friend before punching him in the arm. "You're fucking stupid. Snap out of it," he said, shaking his head. "Fuck. If you're going to act lie this over her, I'm going to insist you fuck the nanny and start acting like a fucking man again." He rolled his eyes, annoyed as fuck. "You miss her? After two days? That's fucking stupid. You realize that right? You really need to get her out of your system. She's got you pussy-whipped and she's not even your girlfriend."

"Is it weird that I actually want to be around to help raise Sam?" Marcus asked. While a Nanny was a necessity, he didn't want to be completely absent in his niece's life. He didn't want to spend the rest of his life as a blood parent but being a responsible adult on occasion couldn't be so bad, right? When Clint mentioned Lyssy, however, Marcus had two very separate emotions. One was sadness for his friend who had lost the sister that he loved so much. The other was a fear and dread of Sam ever getting to that age. Sam was gorgeous and she was going to be a heartbreaker when she grew up. But Marcus wasn't at all prepared to start thinking about Sam as a young single girl that wizards would be drooling over.

Marcus turned away from the new nanny and instead leaned over the counter, not wanting to look at the perfectly amazing piece of arse that was going to end up in his flat for who knew how long. The fact of the matter was, Brigitte was...everything he could ever want in a girl physically. But Katie Bell was everything he'd want in a girl...at all. She was perfect and he loved her and he didn't know what he'd do if she was somehow related to him. It was a weird thought, but he much preferred her as a halfblood.

The hit on the arm from Clint hurt, but it wasn't anything he didn't deserve or expect. Marcus's life was a fucking mess. "Yeah, I miss her. I fucking love her and I don't think she'll be 'out of my system' any time soon," he said with an annoyed groan before finishing off yet another glass of whiskey. He wasn't sure what he'd do if he was related to Kate. But for now? All he could think about was how much he loved her and how he couldn't imagine his life without her.

Clint just stared at Marcus. He didn't know what to think about the Katie and Marcus situation. He never really did. He mostly tried not to think about it. It gave him indigestion. Still, if Flint loved her... fuck. Rolling his eyes skyward, he leaned back taking one long look at Brigitte before turning away. She was nice to look at but he found he could sort of relate. He didn't really have the desire to be with anyone else. Well, occasionally he thought he might like to have sex with some other woman but the monogamy thing wasn't as monstrous as he thought it'd be.

"So," he said, shrugging. "Do some blood work. Figure it out. It's not that hard. The likelihood that she's related to you at all is slim to none. Technically, if I recall... she's a Prewett through her mum and that line married into the Blacks and so did the Flint's... So, if anything, she's already related to you somehow." He shrugged. "See? Nothing to worry about."

Katie was... not in a good place. In fact, she wasn't quite sure how she ended up standing outside of Marcus's flat but... there she was, staring at the door. She wanted to punch it. Or take her wand out and just... blow it up. Anything, really. But... that was too much work. The bitter knot that had gathered around her was constricting and all she could focus on was the anger and hurt she felt from everyone around her. Marcus had left her two days ago without a word, really. She hadn't heard from him and now Ali was in the hospital because she decided to she wanted to be dead...

Snorting in disbelief, unable to find sympathy or empathy or anything for anyone, she opened the door, stepping inside. Her eyes landed on Marcus, a small ray of... something blossoming inside of her. But, something caught her attention and her eyes fell on an incredibly gorgeous blond who... was perfect. She was tiny and thin and had an amazing body and Sam was giggling and playing in her arms. Something inside of Katie just... died, really. A black, empty hole seemed to replace that small, burgeoning light and she just stood there, face blank, an emptiness filling her. Right. She glanced at Marcus, meeting his gaze briefly before turning and walking right back out.

Clint let out a low whistle. "That was kind of scary..."

The whole genealogy of Katie Bell wasn't helping things. So even without her pureblood dad, he was probably already related to her. Which wasn't exactly out of the ordinary for purebloods....but then if you added in her father, depending on who he was, the relationship might end up being even closer. Marcus felt sick. He reached out and smacked Clint in the arm before groaning. "You're absolutely no help, you know that?" he asked. One day, he'd have to find a best friend who lied to make Marcus feel better. Because this brutal honesty shite was really killing him.

Lost in his own thoughts, he barely heard the door open when Katie entered. Luckily, it had registered enough for him to turn and make eye contact with her. Merlin, she was so fucking perfect. He was beyond thrilled to see her until his gaze followed the change in hers....right to the new nanny. Well fuck. Before he could even say anything she was walking back out. Marcus took a large swig out of the bottle of firewhiskey before telling Clint he'd be right back and quickly heading out the door. He couldn't have Katie thinking whatever crazy shite she was thinking. He couldn't handle anymore bad shite in his life.

Moving fast enough to catch up with her, he gently grabbed her arm right above her elbow to try to get her to stop. "Katie," he started, though wasn't sure where to continue with it. He could start by trying to explain about Brigitte. But it wasn't like she'd believe him anyway. He could simply tell her that it wasn't what it looked like. He really had hired the girl based on qualifications, nothing else. But any thoughts of defending himself quickly left when he really got a good look at her. "Are you okay?" he asked, concern evident in his features. "What happened?" Katie never had been very good at covering up her emotions and right now wasn't exactly an exception. There was definitely something very off about her.

Was she okay? Katie stared at him, her eyes dead, face blank. Was she okay? Was she okay? Sure. She was okay. Her eyes stared back, lifeless and unemotional. She was so disconnected from everything. She didn't feel hurt when she saw the blond. She didn't feel disappointment. Hell, she hadn't even felt anger or jealousy. She'd felt... well, nothing. It was strange. She couldn't find anything inside of her that felt like Katie Bell. It scared her a bit but... not enough to care. "Alicia tried to kill herself," she said, matter-of-factly. "After she quit Puddlemere. Ange found her. I don't know who my father is. You are-were a Death Eater. The Ministry is going after Death Eaters. Two of my closest friends were murdered. Possibly by your brother. And my best friend would rather be dead then be alive..." Katie shrugged, disinterested in everything she had to say. "I'm fine," she said, turning to head back home. Her house was empty and lonely...

Katie had never been very good at holding anything back but, the fact that there wasn't anything inside of her that wanted to just... come out? It scared her. It was so... foreign and unreal. "I think I'm just going to go home and have some tea." Maybe a hot bath. Or she'd just go to sleep. For the rest of the weekend. It'd be better this way, really. There was almost something freeing about not caring.

"Oh," she said, handing Marcus a bag of stuff she had picked up for Sam. "This is for Sam. It's some of her dress up stuff she left at my house." Maybe she could play with it with the new, very pretty blond girl.

Something about the emptiness of Katie's expression was a little terrifying and completely unnerving. He'd never seen her like this. She was usually bubbling over with emotion, both good and bad. But nothing? He'd never seen nothing on her face. And then she was speaking and her voice was just as lacking in emotion as her face was. Spinnet tried to off herself? Marcus didn't really like the girl...but it seemed like awfully selfish timing. After everything Katie had been doing for her and now she was going to try to put her through that? But that really wasn't the point right now. Katie had been through hell lately and she'd tried to hard to just worry about everyone else. And now? Now she'd fucking snapped or something if her completely disinterested shrug at the whole situation was any indication.

Marcus didn't know what to do. How had shite gotten so out of hand lately? He mindlessly took the bag for Sam from Katie but after a moment, set it down next to him before taking a step closer to Katie. He then quickly wrapped his arms around her, pulling her tightly against him before pressing a kiss to the side of her head. He had no clue what to say to her. You'll get through this? That just seemed too trite and commonplace at this point. Instead, all he could manage to get out were mutterings about how much he loved Katie. No matter what happened with any of it, that was the one thing that would always hold true.

After a moment, however, he was literally knocked out of the way as Sam shoved her way through the hug to get to Katie. "AUNT KATIE!!" she yelled loudly as she wrapped her arms around one of Katie's legs in what looked to be a death grip.

"Sam, sweetheart. Katie's having a bad time. Why don't you go bother Clint?" Marcus asked gently. But Sam shook her head vehemently as she held onto Katie. She looked up at the much taller girl and took a moment to consider her. "Did your daddy die to?" she asked. "Because then Marcus can be your new dad like me and we could be...we could be sisters! And I've always wanted a sister!" she said excitedly.

Katie didn't feel anything when Marcus held her. Nothing. But, she supposed it was rather nice to be held. Because, well, no one ever did that except Marcus. Katie was always the one holding or hugging or something. It's what she did. She was the coddler and caretaker and now she was standing outside with Marcus instead of being at the hospital with Alicia. A small, tiny bit of guilt welled up inside of her. She did the only thing she could think of and that was slide her arms around Marcus's neck and just... be there. She'd held in so much the past few months... the past week, really and she was paying the price. She was smart enough to be aware of that but it didn't make it any better. She was afraid of reaching for any sort of emotion... afraid that instead of feeling nothing, she'd feel it all and it would be too much. So, she let Marcus hold her, let him murmur about his love and all that.

However, she stayed silent. She didn't know what to say or do or feel. So she didn't do or say anything. It took her a moment to register that Sam was screaming at her. Katie glanced down, feeling the first bit of emotion that she'd felt in what seemed forever. The little girl, with her bright, blue eyes and demeanor had always been fond of Katie and Katie was fond of her. Sam's words penetrated that empty shell that had locked its way around Katie's heart and she felt tears well up behind her eyes. Glancing back at Marcus, she knelt in front of Sam, wrapping her arms around the little girl in a hug.

Sam's arms wrapped tightly around Katie's neck and she smiled. "No sweetheart," Katie said, gently. "My daddy didn't die. I'm sorry yours did, though." Sam just nodded and held onto Katie. Standing up, Sam in her arms, Katie looked at Marcus. He was a dad now. So incredibly strange. "Maybe Uncle Marcus will give you a sister some day." Sam giggled and clapped and reached for Marcus. "Give me a sister!" she said, wrapping her arms around his neck.

He was glad when Katie's arms wrapped around him, but he could practically feel how detached she was from this whole thing. He knew something like this was going to happen. He'd wanted her to deal with things as they happened, not push it all away. He didn't know what he could do for her now other than just be there as much as he could and give her time. Everyone dealt with tragedy in their own way and really? He had no idea what was or wasn't normal for Katie. He would hope that she'd say something if there was any real cause for concern, however. But he wasn't holding his breath on that one. As long as she didn't take the Spinnet way out...

When Sam broke the hug, Marcus stepped back and watched the interaction between Katie and Sam with interest. He heard the footsteps of the Nanny leaving his door, probably to get the little girl, but Marcus simply held his hand up to stop her. She gave a small shrug and after a glance at Katie, headed back into the flat. Well, if Katie couldn't manage to have any emotion around Marcus, at least she did with Sam. It was better than nothing. Everything suddenly felt so surreal as he watched the two of them. He loved them both so much but he felt so incredibly lost. He didn't know how to be a good father figure for Sam. And he didn't know how to be a good whatever he was to Katie. All he wanted was to be able to take care of both of these girls and he had no idea where he was supposed to start. Bringing a less then mediocre Quidditch team to the top of the league? He could do without blinking. Really and truly caring about people outside of himself? That was incredibly foreign.

At Katie's comment to Sam about Marcus giving her a sister, he couldn't help but look at Katie as he held Sam when she grabbed for him. Marcus had learned a few things during his time with Lavender. One of those things had been that he really and honestly didn't want children of his own. Unless they were with Katie. He couldn't imagine himself doing it with anyone else but even the thought of starting a family with Katie was horrifying. And given the current state of things, it wasn't even really worth thinking about. "Maybe some day," he responded to Sam as he looked away from Katie to his niece. "Besides, siblings take away your attention and toys. And you don't want to have to share do you?" Marcus asked.

Sam quickly shook her head no as she giggled. "I'll share with Clint and Katie!" she said excitedly as she kicked her feet. Marcus couldn't help but laugh slightly at her enthusiasm for...everything, really. "What about me?" he asked. "You won't share with me?" Sam continued to shake her head, her hair hitting Marcus as she did so. "Nope! I like Katie more," she said with a wide grin.

It felt a little cold in the hall. That's all she could focus on. The cold, emptiness that moved over her, filling her couldn't be banished. She sort of hated it. She'd rather scream and yell and just explode but... everything was so internal right now that pushing it outward just didn't seem to be a very good option. Her lips turned up in a small, ghost of a smile at Sam's comments. She loved that little girl. The very pretty blonde had come out but left and Katie didn't know what to make of that. She wasn't sure she could handle anything else. Course, maybe it was the best time. After all, it didn't seem there was anything that could upset her. A momentary flash of longing to just be in Marcus's arms went through her but it was gone a second later.

Sam reached out and Katie took her out of Marcus's hands. The little girl quieted, letting her head rest against Katie's shoulder and Katie rubbed soothing circles over her back. "Will you sleepover with me, Katie?" Sam asked, swinging her leg gently against Katie. "You can share my new bed with me and see my new room. I have a new bedroom that I stay in and it has toys and I like it." Sam leaned back, looking at her with large, round, blue eyes, her lower lip popping out in a pouty gesture.

She played with the ends of Katie's hair, twirling them around her finger. "Please Aunt Katie?" she asked again, her lip trembling. Katie's brow raised, somewhat amused. Her eyes flickered to Marcus and she wasn't sure if she was allowed to stay. Marcus had been distant lately and she didn't want to... well, whatever it was, she didn't want to make him uncomfortable. Plus, she really ought to go to St. Mungo's and check on Alicia. The thought of that? Well, it made her stomach drop, really. She couldn't bear to see Alicia that way. Even the idea of it sent a fine tremble through her body and the emotion that had been staid seemed to well up just beyond the bitter shell.

"I don't know, sweetheart," she said, running her fingers through Sam's hair. "Your uncle might have different plans for you, love."

Marcus continued to watch the two of them, having no issues with handin Sam back to Katie when Sam reached for her. His niece fucking loved Bell. It was a bit ridiculous really. If Marcus and Katie ever ended badly, or Merlin forbid she ended up being related to him, Marcus had no idea what he was supposed to do with Sam. Her love for the tall Chaser far outweighed her love for even Marcus.

Sam's plea for Katie to spend the night nearly fucking broke his heart. Sam had had the worst sort of shite dealt at her over the last week yet she was still so enthusiastic and positive about everything. And Katie was more or less in the same boat but had managed to lose the positive bit. And it just really fucking sucked because he really wanted them both to not be going through any of this. It was unfair and unnecessary. At least they still had each other, however. Marcus would like to think that it was good that he was still around for them too but he was seeming less and less important in both of their lives as time continued to carry on.

Marcus couldn't tell if Katie wanted to stay or not. She might have just been being nice to Sam after the invite. But he really wished that a part of her wanted to stay. When Sam looked up at Marcus from Katie's arms expectantly, waiting for an answer on the potential slumber party situation, Marcus couldn't help but shrug. He had no idea what he was supposed to say. "Sam...I'm sure Katie had her own things to be doing right now. But if she decides to stay," he said before glancing up to make eye contact with Katie, "she knows that he's always more than welcome."

Katie gave Marcus a half smile, kissing Sam lightly on the forehead. "How about I stay until you fall asleep?" she asked, bargaining with the little girl. "I have to go visit someone who's very sick but I'll stay with you til you're asleep, okay?" Sam stared at Katie and then looked back at Marcus, her little finger raised to her lip as she pondered. Finally, Sam nodded her head, kissing Katie soundly on the cheek before squirming out of Katie's arms. "UNCLE CLINT!" she yelled, running back to into the flat. "AUNT KATIE AND I ARE GOING TO HAVE A SLEEPOVER!!" Her voice trailed off as the door to the flat was slammed behind her. She could only imagine what Clint was going to say.

Glancing up at Marcus, her eyes finally showing a bit of something in them. Katie took a hesitant step towards Marcus before wrapping her arms around his neck. She just needed to be held. It didn't take long for the tears to start coming and that overwhelming guilt and what she said to Ange well up inside of her. Everything had been so awful lately and she just felt so broken and lost inside and all that pain that she'd pushed down... everything just sort of burst free. Alicia tried to kill herself and her friends were dead and Marcus might end up in Azkaban. She just wanted everyone to be happy...

Crying against his shoulder, Katie finally quieted and pulled away. "I'm so sorry," she managed to gasp out. "I didn't mean to just...blubber all over you." Her eyes were wide and filled with so much sadness and the overwhelming sense of loneliness just seemed to surround her. "It hurts so much, Marcus," she whispered, dropping her head back to his shoulder. "So much." Alicia could've... Merlin. Her stomach dropped out and she felt like she just might be sick.

Marcus couldn't help the smile he gave at how excited Sam was. He gave a small laugh and an amused shake of his head as she ran down the hallway, yelling for Clint. Clint was just going to love hearing about Katie having a 'sleepover', he was sure. Looking back at Katie, his smile faded. He had no idea what he was supposed to do about her. He wished he could just make everything better but he wasn't sure that he could. At least she'd agreed to stay with Sam for a while. They both seemed to bring out a positive side of the other.

It surprised him a bit when Katie stepped forward and wrapped her arms around his neck, but Marcus's arms wrapped instantly around her, holding her tightly to him. There were few things on earth that he hated more than when Katie cried. At the moment, he couldn't think of any of them. Katie crying was awful. It made him feel so useless. But he supposed that her crying was better than the emotionless demeanor she had previously. At least this was human. This was normal. And it sucked and was awful but it was better than being completely shut down.

When she started to apologize, Marcus shook his head. "You have nothing to be sorry for," he said. He didn't know what she could possibly be apologizing for. She was allowed to cry. She didn't have to be sorry for showing her emotions around him. He loved her no matter what and part of loving her was wanting to be there for her when she hurt. Now was definitely one of those times. "I know, I know," he said quietly when she said it hurt. Merlin, Marcus hated this. "It'll get better, Katie." Or so he hoped. It had to, right? Things couldn't continue to be this awful for her.
