Some things were second nature. For Evan, it used to be that he could draw anything placed in front of him and write the story to accompany it. Now, though, it was that he could solo it and fight his way out of a hoard with just as much efficiency than any group. And that was what he was doing. Using his speed to his advantage, he darted through clusters of infected and slashed at them every now and again to keep their attention from his companion as hurried across the street.
It was easy to be bait when you were small and fast. Evan was faster than most runners, and he went into situations without fear most of the time, so between that and his Immune status he liked to make himself bait. If you lived in fear at the end of the world, you usually didn't live long. It was either hunger or the virus, but one or the other would inevitably get you.
He had endless thoughts, theories and rants about the end of the world and what it meant, but aside from Danny, no one ever cared to hear about them. Besides that, some things were just better left unsaid, and theories about something that essentially crippled the entire world definitely fell into that category. He'd seen people start bickering over less than that, and as much of an anti-social person as he was, he still didn't like flat-out fighting.
He'd done his job rather well in keeping the infected away from Lukas, with occasional taunts and the "meat bait bombs" that a few folks at the safehouse had tossed together, and he turned his head to look at Lukas' progress, allowing himself to relax just a little bit when he saw that he was standing atop the barricade. Throwing his kukri out to hack at a runner as it came at him, he watched it fall back, then sliced it again before turning tail and heading for the barricade. He'd just check back in, tell them that Lukas was okay, before he went back out on his supply run.
It was when he was about three-quarters of the way across the street when he spotted a leaper eyeing him from the top of a car. His hand went for the shotgun hanging from the right side of his belt, but it was in the air before he'd even reached it…
