"Forgive me for saying, but it was a rather inappropriate suggestion," was all that Evan said in response to the man's defense of himself. "If I wanted to kill myself, I'd have done it already," he spoke, his tone short and dripping with very obvious animosity. The statement was both true and untrue. He wanted to. He'd wanted to since he'd had to leave Olivia, Steph and his mother. But… he didn't want to. Not only had he made that promise in sincerity, but he couldn't very well leave Danny and Georgie behind. Danny was a good kid, but he'd make a piss poor fighter. And Georgie… was too brave. She'd get herself killed within days.
They needed him, and that was one of his prime motivators for continuing to fight the good fight.
In the beginning, the rebellions; the pockets of resistance that decided not to conform to the government's demands, had been his aim. He'd wanted to run with them, fight the same good fight but for people who had their freedom… could come and go as they pleased and didn't have uber-restrictive rules. He'd been headed for one specific group when he'd been caught three years ago, but he'd never know what it was like now.
Pulling himself from his wistful train of thought, he let the fire of irritation come back to his eyes. He favored that to wistful sadness anyway. Much easier to deal with. "Yes well, forgive me for saying but your own way sucks," Evan fired back. That was something that he'd never understood about people. Someone saves your life and you think that just because you fire back with a "custom-made-thank-you," you're even. Evan didn't have to divert from his course to go save this guy's ass, but he had. And instead of a sincere thank you, he got a "go kill yourself." People baffled him, plain and simple.
The questions surprised him. Evan's attitude was usually enough to deter people from asking too many questions, but apparently this guy was a glutton for punishment. Shaking his head no, he shrugged a shoulder. "Not missing anyone," he said, leaving details vague. "Got my sister and brother back at the safehouse," he trailed off. He didn't go into details about losing his wife to people that he'd been stationed with for five years, let alone complete strangers. But with any manner of observation skills, the man would be able to see that Evan was wearing a wedding ring and hadn't mentioned a spouse.
