"I'm sure you will," she responded stiffly, eyes never leaving him even after he'd turned away from her.
It wouldn't be so difficult to knock him over the side of the roof, put on an act that it was all just an unfortunate accident that she had coincidentally been the only witness to. Some of their superiors might even cheer at the loss, give her a medal and all that. Then again, it was altogether just as likely that they'd cheer Evan, were the situation reversed. Benefits of being mutually at the bottom of the popularity pit. And besides that? She didn't really trust that many others to watch her back as well as Evan did, although one would have to twist her arm out of its socket to get her to admit to such a thing.
It took a great effort to keep the surprise and suspicion from showing on her face. Why wasn't he making a fuss over the nabbed champagne? If it had been hers that he'd taken, she would've snatched it back. Or spitefully broken the bottle. Leah could only reasonably believe that he had decided to play along with her little game, because why else would he endure her company so easily? Surely not out of any need for her companionship. Leah decided to take full advantage and see how far she could take it.
Opening the bottle would be the real challenge, considering she'd never had the opportunity to drink champagne before. At least never the expensive brands. The foil was the easy part, but getting into the cage surrounding the cork? She hoped Evan wouldn't decide to turn around and watch her struggle with it. "I could," she replied, trying to make her tone sound conversational while contending with the cork, "but they seem to be having a fun time without me. I'd hate to be a party crasher," she added ironically.
"I guess I'm fashionably early, then. Goody for me. Guess that means I get first and best pick of the party favors."
