In his life, David had gotten really good at suppressing his jealousy. Sometimes, it surprised him that he and Elliot even shared one parent, because they were so different. Elliot had all the cool suaveness and David was just shy and awkward. He wasn't even brainy like most nerds, he was just... average and awkward. And a little ghost obsessed. So jealousy? Yeah, he was used to that. Used to seeing Elliot get girls like Rae and being on a solo streak of six years himself.
He'd realized that the other day; he and Elliot had just been reunited after four years apart, and Elliot still knew who his last girlfriend was. It was a sad fact, but painfully true. He just... got used to it.
Until, anyway, someone put him in a situation like this. He looked at the computer screen and dashed his tongue out to wet his lips, averting his eyes for a second to try and compose himself. He couldn't just leave. Or... he could, but Rae had asked him to do this and she did enough for both he and his brother that one favor wasn't too outlandish to ask in return. No matter how nervous it made him.
He turned his eyes back to the screen just in time to see the smile cross her face. Without even consciously trying, he returned the smile. It was one of those smiles that was just... contagious, he supposed. "I guess I have," he finally spoke up. "It's okay, I don't mind." He leaned back against a nearby counter and brushed a hand through his hair. "I hope I am, too. Wouldn't want to let you down..." he chuckled awkwardly. God did he hope that he didn't look as nervous as he felt. Just once in his life, he hoped that he could get through a conversation with a pretty girl without making a complete and total idiot out of himself.
So far, he felt pretty unsuccessful.
She asked him about the party and he looked at her again. "Oh. Um, I don't know. I'm not much of a party person, you know?" He'd gone to one party when he was in high school, and it had been open invitation. He'd left before anyone else, and he'd never really been to an actual party since. "It's your party, isn't it? You're planning it?" he asked.
