WHO: O'Brien and Kris
WHAT: Absolutely necessary arcade game pickups and a little investigative research into Kris' missing Betsy.
WHERE: Grand Central, then out into the madness.
WHEN: Backdated to 12/27.
RATING: Low, maybe medium for language.
STATUS: In progress.
It never occurred to Kris, exactly how much he depended on Betsy until she was gone. His backup—a significantly less "tricked out" Macbook Pro—was nice and all, but it didn't have all the bells and whistles that Betsy had. And while it held a solar charge, he didn't get the damn near eight hours of cord-free use that he did with Betsy. It wasn't as light and it wasn't as comfortable for him to use, either. It just... wasn't Betsy.
And because of that, as well as a few more things, he was slightly nervous about this run outside with O'Brien. It wasn't like he knew who O'Brien was, and the last time he'd gone on a supply run had been with Elliot. That hadn't gone so well. And he didn't even have Betsy with him this time. Yeah, he had the overloading software on this backup computer. Of course he did, he wasn't an idiot. But he'd only been able to do limited testing, and he was afraid that it couldn't handle what Betsy could.
God help him if this little backup exploded on him instead of his little electronics. All he knew was that this was the first time in a long time that he'd bring his gun as a backup.
He did one last system check (he'd easily done twenty over the past hour) and deemed the system "okay," even though it was running at ship-shape. Breathing a heavy sigh, he decided to play a game while he waited for O'Brien to get there. Not anything too complicated, since he still didn't trust this system with anything beyond what was necessary. One of the stock games. Like Minesweeper.
And even that seemed to take longer to open than it would've on Betsy.
The situation was made infinitely worse by the fact that sitting unobtrusively on Kris' computer, was easily accessible information that he wanted no one in the world to know. It made him vaguely paranoid. Like every person who showed up in his vicinity knew all of his secrets. He was even a little suspicious of this arcade run with O'Brien, though he'd never say as much aloud.
He hated being paranoid almost as much as he hated not having Betsy.
In his lost thought process, he hardly realized that he'd hit his third mine about five clicks ago. "Shit," he muttered as he restarted.
