"I get that," Evan murmured. "Them and the stupid promise I made to my wife," he snorted. Though really, could he call what he was doing living? He'd promised her that he'd live past the infection. Promised her that he'd see the better tomorrow... all that sappy stuff he'd given up on long ago. "It's time, though. I'm tired of not being able to do what I think is right, for fear of what they'll do." It would be a legitimate concern for awhile, and he would have to watch over George and Danny double time for awhile. At least while they figured things out, until they found a safe place to stay.
It was strange, how it took something like this to form a kind of grudging respect between a pair of people who, up until now, would have liked not much more than for the other to disappear. Okay, that wasn't entirely true. Evan trusted Leah. She was capable, and there weren't many others he'd rather have at his back. He just... never expected them to be at this point. Or even close to it.
Leah's thought that maybe Holloway—who no longer deserved the prestige of being referred to as "Internet Guy" or anything that went with it—would create some government loophole was a good thought to have. "We find out anything about that, his number comes up. Simple as that." It was street justice, maybe, but they didn't live in a comfortable, cushy world anymore and they couldn't afford to be patient or coddle anyone anymore. Obvious exceptions being one another and their families.
A hollow laugh followed Leah's humorless comment. "About as much faith as you have in mine, I'm certain," he joked emptily. "But all right. You handle it." He couldn't promise he wouldn't come unhinged, either, so it was for the best.
When she relaxed, he followed suit, resting his ankle on his knee. "About the rebellion, yes. About Holloway, not yet. I'm... training her, I think. I'd feel best if she was prepared. I don't know if she's completely comfortable with the idea, but she will be when we have our freedom," he pointed out. Leah mentioned having her brother's support and Evan nodded. "Good." He may not have been Evan's favorite person, but the man was a tactical genius.
"He coming with on this sewer thing, by the way?" he asked.
