It wasn’t often that Talia had company in the lab anymore. Sometimes Miah or Ellie would be out, but more often than not she was out by herself. Maybe not the most practical thing, since it meant a trip from the compound and back on her own, but for the most part her work didn’t need a second set of hands, even if it would be useful. It also wasn’t often that she could pry Zach away from the infirmary. If nothing else could be said about that man, it could definitely be said that he took his work seriously. Maybe sometimes too seriously. She rolled her sleeves and dug around the set of drawers for a set of gloves. There wasn’t anything fancy on her table today, just a Shuffler, but this one had still been moving, even with tendons that were completely rotted away. That was what she wanted to study today. “How are you stomaching the smell?” she asked Zach, sliding her eyes across the room to him. “It takes some getting used to.” Rotting flesh held that smell that got stuck in your nose and wouldn’t leave. Talia had been around it so much that it didn’t bother her as much as it would others. But only because she suspected her nose was somewhat desensitized to it. “It would be so much easier determining how the motor skills were still working if we could study how much or how little their brain function was still present.” She wondered sometimes how scientifically accurate the zombie movies and television series were, since they had all held one theory or another about the undead. “It’s a lot of guesswork, which makes me feel like I’m not really making any progress at all.” There weren’t many people she would admit that to, but Zach was one of the few. |
