He couldn’t sleep and that was getting mighty annoying. Two months and he still hadn’t adjusted to the relative peace the compounded experienced at night. His instincts were just hardwired these days for the sound of the wind and the shuffle of gravel and rocks as the patrols kept everyone else safe for another 12 hours. As a result, Jake was developing the nasty habit of wandering during the night. Doing circuits of the perimeter to satisfy him this place was as secure as it looked.
As with each night previous Jake’s trek back to his room took him by the cafeteria. However, unlike night’s before the light was on and that was enough to attract his attention and put off his falling into bed for another ten or fifteen minutes depending on what he found. And if he was honest he wouldn’t mind a little snack before he passed out. It wouldn’t hurt to have a little something in his gut that wasn’t his usually self-prescribed dosage of moonshine for one night. Might actually help all things considered. It was getting harder to ignore his guilt of leaving Kara behind with Redd and the gang.
Lumbering into the kitchen Jake poked around a bit eying the refrigerators for half a heart beat before moving on back toward the pantries, chasing the sound of someone else rummaging around. When he was certain he’d found the right pantry he realized it’d be better to announce his presence than scare the bejesus out of whoever was looking for a midnight snack. “Find anything good back here?” He asked his voice carrying through the room as he continued to wander the aisles of dry goods. “Cause I’m finding absolutely nothing over here.”
