|Brandon hated worrying. It always put him out of his normal frame of mind and made him act irrationally. If there was anything Leah had taught him, it was rationality. But right now, it was too reminiscent of five years ago. Leah in the hospital, and then Marigold gone.|
He shook the memories off and held a little tighter to Cin's leash. Just because Lele was in the infirmary didn't mean that the dog could stay locked in his room, and he'd needed to let her out for a walk. Why he'd come back this way, he didn't know. Maybe to check on Lele one last time before bringing Cin to play with Mari and the puppy at Lilah's for the night. Whatever it was, though, Cin was happy to be outside for a little while.
The husky tugged at the leash, trying to get at anything within reach—or even out of reach—and Brandon laughed a little in spite of the situation. "You hate being on that thing, don't you," he asked the dog, whose tail thudded excitedly against Brandon's leg in response. "Alright. Just don't go too far." He leaned down and unhooked the leash, watching as Cin turned and looked at him, almost surprised at being let free. "Go on, dude."
Without further hesitation, Cinnamon bounded off in the direction of a nearby building and started sniffing around for a place to do his doggy duty.
Brandon laughed again and leaned back against the infirmary's outer wall, then looked down at the ground, thinking. What if somehow, Lele lost this kid too? His sister was strong, but that didn't mean she'd be able to recover from this. Fuck, he thought, scratching a hand through his hair and shaking his head no.
"No, it wouldn't happened twice," he insisted. "No way. The baby's fine. It was just one of those weird fucking pregnancy things, right?" he asked himself, then raised his head to watch Cinnamon bound toward someone heading his way. "Hey!" he called to the dog. "Where you getting off to? Come, Cin!"
