"I can climb higher than you!" Emma shouted to Elisa as she made her way up the monkey bars. Toby wondered, sometimes, how the two of them had become such fans of heights. Toby's mother was terrified of anything higher than the second floor of their house, Siobhan had hated heights and Toby, while not afraid, wasn't a big fan of them, either. But it seemed like every time he turned his back, they were up some tree or on top of the monkey bars. It was good, he supposed. It meant that the fears of those who raised them hadn't passed off. But he wondered how long the dangerous streak went. He hoped that it wasn't that long. Elisa shook her head vehemently as she passed by Emma on her way to the top. "You're taller than me and that means you can't fit through the small people holes," she retorted, weaving past Emma and sitting on top of the bars. With a huff, Emma dropped to the ground and looked around for something she deemed "cooler" than the monkey bars. After a few seconds, it appeared that she found something when she waved her hands and bounded toward someone in the distance. "Maddie! Maddie hi!" she called. As he turned to see where Emma was running, Toby's 'therapist switch' flicked on. He heard Elisa's feet hit the ground, as she climbed out of the monkey bars and followed her aunt's lead. "Maddie!" she shrieked, holding the "e" sound for about ten seconds. Zach's request rang about in his head; the oldest Johnson asked Toby to talk to his younger siblings and see if he could get anywhere. But immediately breaking up the conversation between the three girls wasn't the way to go about it. Instead, maybe, he'd let Emma and Elisa serve as ice-breakers. He didn't move right away. Instead, he let out a silent laugh as he watched them. "Hi, Maddie!" Elisa bounced up and down in front of the older girl once she'd approached. "What're you doing here?" He decided to let this play out for a little while before he approached and saw if he could do anything. |
