“They do I’m sure,” Nick answered honestly. “But it’s not like it’s Fort Knox around here or anything.” Granted as far as she knew nobody had tried to get at the stuff, and to be entirely honest she didn’t even know where half of it was kept, just that they had a lot of the stuff. She laughed outright when he made the comment about not being able to get through locked doors, reminded of the fact that her boyfriend actually could get through a locked door. “Probably a wise idea, since I know of at least one person who could go walking through locked doors.” She found herself laughing softly at Jace’s shifty-eyed antics, it was definitely clear why people liked him – he was easily likable.
Maybe her reasoning didn’t entirely make sense, but she wasn’t the type to back down after making a point. So she would hold her ground, even if the reasoning behind it wasn’t exactly solid. At his question, she smiled ruefully. “Nothing really, well, except for the fact that Silas hasn’t yet let me near the things that go boom,” but he had made mention of letting her near the stuff, but injuries and drama kept getting in the way of that. “No, well, at one point yes, but that’s not the reason. Like I said, Silas just hasn’t given me access to the stuff yet.”
“I was getting something for someone,” Again Nick skirted around admitting exactly why she was out in Ossining. Part of her was protecting her own pride, and part of her didn’t want to throw Maddie under the bus and tell people that the other girl had dared her to do it – despite their differences, it just wasn’t fair to turn her into the bad guy when Nick was just as much to blame for her own injury. “Fine, if you say so,” who was she to argue about heritage and all of that. “I suppose you could say my family has a tendency towards the reckless, well, except for me.” Partly because she’d been sheltered and protected by her older brothers.
“Practically no chance?” Nick quirked an eyebrow as she studied him. “Do I need to make sure a fire extinguisher is around?” Alright, so maybe she was just giving Jace a hard time for the fun of it. After all it was kind of in her nature. “I suppose that’s good enough to want to see the trick, but it’s not my fault if you set yourself on fire, okay?”
