Silas cracked a smile at EJ’s antics, and ruffled the infant’s hair with his free hand. “I miss him too,” he said simply. “Both of you.” But that had already been talked about, so he let the statement settle and moved on. “We’re gonna cause so much trouble when you’re bigger, kid,” he stage whispered to EJ, sliding his eyes to Rae, aiming for a smile. “Your ma won’t be able to keep us under control.” As far from the truth as he could get actually, since Rae had proven that she knew how to keep Silas in check and would undoubtedly be able to do the same with her son. Something Silas never realized he wouldn’t actually mind, having someone around that factored into his decision-making.
It was a relief that his mistakes hadn’t brought his relationship crashing down around him.
“Smart kid,” he commented. “Soon as he tries to wedge his fingers under the damn thing it’s coming off though,” he added with a laugh, gently trying to keep EJ’s fingers from finding his face. Baby curiosity was a new experience for him, among so many others that had happened within the last year.
He grinned. “Remind me to thank Kori for making sure I didn’t look like an ass,” he said, laughing at her reaction. “But I’m not gonna abuse any kind of power, even if I could.” Part of him felt like no matter what Rae said he shouldn’t push his limits just yet. There was still a fair amount of guilt laced into the ordeal from March. “’Cause I’m a good guy like that.” And he tried hard to keep that from sounding sarcastic, because he didn’t really want a look from Rae tonight, and he knew that level of self deprecation usually managed one. “I never saw that, so I got nothing but your word to go off of.” And it never hurt to hear that Rae thought he was hot; an ego boost was an ego boost, and especially since he felt like he still looked a little haggard it was even better to hear just then.
“Love you too,” he returned, drawing her back in to kiss her a little deeper, but just as quickly as the first had been.
A million questions were racing through his brain, but he kept them from bubbling over, instead he gave Rae a curious look as she led them away from the party and towards the garage. He’d been around there more in the last couple of days than the last few weeks, and he would have noticed something out of place.
He shifted EJ a little before he stepped through the door with a nod, letting his eyes adjust a little before he exhaled a shocked little sound. Damn, he’d thought maybe the random key belonged to a bike, but he hadn’t seriously entertained the option.
“Fuck,” he breathed, pivoting to look at Rae, then back at the bike. “You didn’t…” he trailed off, a little speechless and more than a little disbelieving. “That is one fucking nice ride,” he stated when he’d recovered from the shock a little. “But c’mon babe, that ain’t mine, right? It’s something else in here you were taking me to.” So maybe he was still having a little bit of a hard time believing the bike was his.
