A small part of Rae wanted to tell him that this party was to celebrate his decision to sober up, too, but she didn't really want to put him on the spot or make him uncomfortable. So, she stuck with the concept that it was for his birthday. Besides, that had been the initial plan, even back before the drug problem had resurfaced. Whatever it was for really didn't matter, anyway. He was here and she was glad, and she hoped she could make the evening enjoyable for him.
Her eyes turned and she scanned the party happily. Everything was going exactly as she'd planned. Maybe it was a little bit different; she'd wanted to make food for them herself and she'd thought that maybe the weather would be a bit warmer, but when they started dancing together, maybe things would be warmer. They'd definitely be warmer.
Awesome. Rae felt her smile turn up a little bit, but her face was still a little haggard, a little more tired than it normally was. She was grateful for the mask hiding the dark circles under her eyes. "Good." She brushed a hand through EJ's hair and watched with a smile as her son reached for Topher to hold him. "I think someone wants to give you a birthday hug," she grinned. "He's been reaching for you for the past, like, fifteen minutes or so." She laughed.
When he kissed her temple, she felt her smile growing a little bit more. "I've always been kind of a lace-over-leather type, but..." she looked down at herself, "I've got to say, I like what this costume is doing to my boobs." She used her free arm to lift them a little. It was still strange for her, having larger boobs. One of the benefits of having a kid, she guessed. "You could ask for anything you want," she pointed out with a loving smile. "And I'd do whatever I could to get it for you. Just for the record. Because I love you." Well, that and because he'd worked hard to get better over the past few weeks. "You totally make the hottest Batman ever, though."
Her smile was still humble, and she looked up at him with adoration in her eyes.
"So, we've got a couple of options," she pointed out. "I could take that rain check you offered me for a birthday dance and then show you what that other key was for, or I could show you what that other key was for and then I could take you up on that birthday dance rain check. Or we could do something completely different. Birthday boy chooses."
