One corner of her mouth quirked into a smirk. “Only a small big deal,” she said ironically. “You hide it well, though. Your nerves. I get more nervous the closer we get to the date. As long as you don't completely lose your head that day, I think we'll be okay.”
“Right.” Her voice was distant, thoughtful. Giving herself a mental shake, she refocused. “Right. You're right. I'm probably still trying to get past the thought that she'll be sleeping in a storage room in a prison. I mean, I suppose it's about as good as we can get, but it still isn't the ideal place I'd want my baby to sleep.” Yet another thing to tack on to the list of reasons why raising kids during this time was going to be more difficult. “Maybe my brother's housing project will get off the ground and the girls won't have to be cramped together for very long. We've got other options, I suppose.”
Happy thoughts of spending time with Analeigh were tinged with sadness for the effect it would potentially have on Marigold. She'd have her puppy soon, so it was possible she wouldn't notice it as much, but Leah didn't want to make her oldest child beg for attention. Leah wouldn't ignore Marigold intentionally, but there was an immense joy in the thought of being able to hold her baby - like she hadn't gotten the chance to hold baby Marigold.
“It is,” she agreed, canting her head to one side with a look of fondness. “Better to talk now, than have it all come out in an irrational rush later.” Using her thumb, she stroked the back of his hand and offered a small smile. “I believe you. You've taken good care of us so far.”
Leah snorted a soft laugh, closing her eyes when Evan kissed her. “I don't know about you, but I'll be glad when you can do that without a giant stomach in the way,” was her exaggerated comment before she dropped her attention to the stencils. Without knowing his exact vision for the room, it was difficult to make a decision, but she reached out to take one of the shapes anyway, glancing at his face uncertainly on the off chance that she chose something that was supposed to be painted later on. “This.... one?” Images of Thing 1 and Thing 2.
