Emma was in a tree. And not just any tree. She'd chosen one of the larger trees in the compound, with large branches almost all the way up, and she just kept climbing. It didn't matter how many times Toby called to her from the ground, she just kept climbing higher. At a point, about ten feet higher than where Emma was currently climbing, the branches thinned out—not just in density, but in amount—and that was just asking for trouble. If she fell from that high? A broken leg would be the least of their worries. "Em!" Toby called up the tree to his younger sister. "Come on, don't do this, okay? If you fall, you'll break your neck! Just climb back down." With a loud laugh, Emma just ignored his plea and continued her climb. And if that wasn't enough on its own, Elisa tugged at his hand where he clutched onto her tightly, wanting to run off and play with the bear where she slept a few feet away. "Not right now, 'Lis. Help me get Em down from the tree, please," he pleaded with his daughter, who scoffed and tugged away from him. "Elisa Quinn Brooks!" he shouted, watching as she bounded in the direction of the bear. Heaving a frustrated sigh, he kept his eye on Elisa, before turning to look up at Emma. "Come on, Em, please! 'Lis isn't cooperating, and I need you to be the big girl here and climb back down, help me get her reeled in, okay?" he pleaded with his sister. "Please." In a sing-songy voice, his sister called down to him. "Nooooo!" and made a small jump to reach a branch over her head. |
