Rae paused at that thought. Down? No, not down. That was exactly what she didn't want to happen here. One up, one to go, Rae's mind amended, as she turned her head to look at April's bed. Sure, it had been a little bit of a weight off her shoulders when Topher woke up, but there was still the crushing weight of her cousin, who'd been out for much longer than was expected. One to go, her mind repeated, as she looked at April.
Lowering her head, she rested it in her hands and closed her eyes for a moment, trying to give her brain just a few minutes rest to reset. She was tired. It felt like the last time she'd legitimately had a good night's sleep was that night in the room with Topher a couple of weeks ago. Since then, it had been one thing after another, and she hadn't been able to get much by way of rest. Just a few moments here and there, an hour or so at a time, when everything was quiet. She'd been about to doze off, when EJ made a noise. She lifted her head and looked at him, and quickly realized that it was just another sleep noise.
She breathed a sigh and let her head drop back. Everyone was sleeping but her. But then, she didn't feel right sleeping while one of the people she cared about most in the world was out cold.
It was then that she heard the quiet voice coming from the direction of April's bed. She jumped to attention and practically sprang to her feet, crossing the room in three quick strides to get to her cousin's bedside. "April?" she asked, an arbitrary question In the grand scheme of things, since she knew full well it was April. "Oh god, April..." she felt her eyes welling up with tears.
Her hand reached to take her cousin's, and she drew it to her closed both of hers around it. "You're awake," she repeated, again arbitrarily. "Thank god," she added.
After leaning over the bed to kiss her cousin on the forehead, she gave a desperate smile. April's question was met with a downtrodden expression, and she shrugged one shoulder. "Too long," she started, then chuckled a little bit. That was almost a Lucas answer. "Four days. I thought..." she stumbled. "Could you hear what I thought?" she asked.
