Try and stay with him? April nodded her head weakly, hoping she could manage that simply request. Everything was getting a little fuzzy around the edges, but she would stay awake, because it seemed important that she do that. Despite any kind of logic, she believed him when he said everything would be okay, not even questioning his ability to follow through with that promise.
At his question her mind flashed back to how she had wound up alone to face that guy. “No, we aren’t,” she answered quietly, fighting back that fear the wanted to creep up – the fear of losing Lucas again. “Evan was stabbed, and Lucas is trying to save him.” At least that’s how April thought of it. Since Lucas had left, hauling Evan back to the compound.
Trust was more easily given when someone was promising you everything would be alright. Or maybe she was just different from most people, whatever it was, she wasn’t going to distrust or question the man who had just saved her life – even if she only knew his name, that he was Kori’s brother and that he didn’t like Rae. “M’kay,” she murmured, appreciating the reassurance.
The jostling hurt a lot, and she found herself wincing and whimpering like a small child. But she didn’t want him to slow down to ease the pain, she needed to get to the infirmary and going slowly wasn’t and option.
Stay awake. He was very stubborn about that, and April found herself giggling, though she couldn’t explain why. “That could be a weird conversation,” she pointed out; her mind was an odd place.
“Better idea,” she agreed softly. Although she hadn’t expected that to be his first question, she found it kept her mind working more than some questions might have. “I came because Lucas came,” April began. “And Rae, they’re my family and I didn’t want them out here alone.” That was one of the reasons; the other reason was that she was here to keep Lucas in line – though that wasn’t needed anymore. “S-someone had to be able to talk sense into Lucas,” she added, her gaze moving to look ahead of them. “But he’s not out there anymore, so I’m not needed.” Brandon was moving quickly and she could already see the walls of Sing Sing up ahead.
