God fucking damn it. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Reg and Alghren trying to help Silas, and part of him wanted to shout to her, tell her that her cousin was over here, too, but Brandon figured that she was small. He could do it himself. He'd tell her later, or something. "Just try and stay with me." All he could do was talk to her, try to keep her awake; on the right side of consciousness. "It'll be okay, I'll make sure of it." A weighty promise, especially at a time like this.
"How'd you get separated from your brother, anyway?" he asked her. "The two of you aren't usually apart, right? So..."
It was fucking weird, that she was so willing to put her trust in him, especially since she didn't know him from a hole in the ground, and the only thing she did know were the shitty things he said about her cousin. "Moving as quickly as I can, okay?" As quickly as he could without hurting her, and avoiding the traps. Once they were clear of the barricade, then he could move a little bit quicker.
"See, exactly. Means you have to stay awake, alright? Why don't you just talk to me, alright? Just tell me any little thing that pops into your mind." Rather than going to sleep.
He paused. "Or I can ask you a question, instead," he added. There weren't too many that came to mind right away, but the first one was, "Like... why did you come out here for this? Your brother, too, actually. You should've been safe back in the compound." If it was about their cousin, even Brandon would vouch for the fact that she could handle herself. He may not have liked her, but she was tough. She was a survivor. If anything, having them there might have slowed her, because of her concern for her cousins.
