Jake. Her brother was alive, he was here and he was in one piece…mostly. Nick hadn’t allowed herself to truly get her hopes up last night when Talia had made that network post, but all the same she had literally ran to the infirmary and skidded through the doors, looking around wild eyed for anyone who might be able to point her towards the patient with the same name as her brother. It had taken about five minutes, partly because everyone was focused on the infirmary more notable patient, but to Nick the most important patient within those walls at the moment had been the one possibly related to her. The nurse, or whatever the infirmary’s equivalent was had directed her towards his ‘room’ and on shaky legs and with her heart racing what felt like a mile a minute she had made her way towards the bed. The man was fairly beat up, but even underneath the bruises and the scrapes – and god knows what other injuries – there was no mistaking that the man lying on the bed was her oldest brother. He had been out when she had first arrived, so hesitantly she had sunk down into the chair next to the bed, her hand finding his and squeezing gently. God knows how long she had sat like that before he had woken up, but he had woken up. They hadn’t talked much last night, partly because Jake had been in and out of sleep, and partly because Nick didn’t even know where to begin. So much had happened in the last two years, scratch that, so much had happened in the last five months. It would take a bit to figure out where to begin, and how not to overwhelm him with information. She didn’t care though, they would have time to talk, what truly mattered was that he was here. Out of the three brothers she had, Jake was probably the last one she had ever expected to see again. But she was over the moon that she was seeing him again. Sleeping in the chair in the infirmary hadn’t been comfortable, but there was no way she was going to leave his side, or not for that long anyway – she had left his side to get breakfast for the two of them, but that had been the only time in the last 24 hours that she had been away from him. I can’t believe he’s really here. That thought just kept racing through her mind. Apparently the world was still full of surprises. Her gaze traveled around the infirmary, only kind of aware of the other people coming and going. Most of the attention focused in another section of the area, focused on another man who’d come back from the dead. But soon she caught movement out of the corner of her eye and her attention was zeroed in on Jake. “Hey,” she murmured as she caught his eyes opening. “Am I going to hear about lights and swirly colors again?” |
