Sometimes, the closeness of the relationship she shared with her cousins—particularly April, though she and Lucas were still very close, compared to most cousin pairs—astounded her. April was one of the few people in the world who Rae could argue with, and then return to flawless closeness without even batting an eyelash. They'd always been that way, really. They'd fight, and then they'd feel horrible about fighting and want to forget what it was that they'd fought about. Of course, this time, Rae hadn't forgotten. Yes, she was a mother now, which meant that yes, she absolutely had to be more careful when she left the compound. That didn't mean, however, that she was a butterfly that needed to be kept under glass, only to be admired and never to do anything outside of the compound again. It simply meant that she needed to be more careful, which she absolutely had been during their outing the other day. Now wasn't the time to rehash that argument, though. She had her son's carseat in one hand, with EJ inside, wrapped in enough blankets to keep even the coldest person warm, and her baby bag over her shoulder. Inside the baby bag were not only EJ's things, but also the soup April had asked for, as well as some of their Great Aunt Diane's special recipe bread, and some of the tea she'd blended together. They'd be all set for a nice lunch this time around. Once she got to guard tower three, she set EJ down on the floor and put the food out on the collapsible table, then turned the space heater on with a little smile. This guard tower was a nice place to meet up for a special lunch, she decided. Yeah, they could have done it in the apartment, but they spent practically every waking moment in there. It was nice to get out every once in awhile. She set out the bowls, keeping the soup, tea and bread in the small hot-cold bag she used to deliver leftovers home to her cousins. Everything was set, and the room was even warm enough to relax in now. Now, of course, all that was missing was her cousin. She smiled and pulled one of the heavier blankets off of EJ, smoothing her hand along her son's cheek. "Getting a little roasty in there, hm, Little One?" she asked him, pulling the hat off of his head. "That better?" EJ looked up at her with a toothless grin, and Rae couldn't help but laugh. "I'll take that as a yes," she said, as her son reached up for one of her fingers to hold. "How 'bout I do you one better, hm?" she asked, unstrapping him and pulling him up into her arms. "How's that?" she asked, as she started bouncing him lightly in her arms. |
