Who: Ben and Laney When: This afternoon What: Amusing reunion Where: Out and about Rating: PG-13?
Ben still wasn't used to this. He would never be comfortable going out and searching for things. It was probably for the best, honestly. It wasn’t safe outside the doors of the library. When he went out on his own, he didn’t have anyone watching his back. The infected were everywhere, and on top of that, there were some much less than friendly people running around who would shoot you to steal your goods. You could smile all you wanted, be friendly, chat someone up, but your hand still itched when it was too far away from your gun.
Ben did have a little edge over most people in that he was and had always been extremely observant. He noticed things that most people overlooked. Today was no different. Keeping half his attention on watching his back and the other half on scanning the ground, a blotch of brown caught his attention. He could understand how it went unnoticed. It was so dirty that it blended in with its surroundings, not to mention being buried underneath a somewhat substantial pile of random junk.
This was the part he didn’t like. In order to get the bag out, he was going to have to use both of his hands. It was going to be a lot harder to listen for anything coming his way when he was shifting things around, and he was going to be focusing on not making too much racket on top of it all. Taking in a deep breath, he started to move the junk no one had deemed worthy of collecting until the bag slowly came into view, and Ben realized the bag was much larger than he had originally thought. When he’d finally got it out, he unzipped it and grinned broadly.
It was a mixture of things, but most notably it had medical supplies, including what appeared to be, “Penicillin,” he said to himself, holding the bottle up so he could read the label. “Morphine.” This was some valuable stuff these days, and he replaced it and zipped up the bag so that he could head back to the library. No sense in staying out here in the open with a bag to carry around, especially one containing valuables. He had only taken a few steps when he heard the noise behind him. He shifted his path a bit and sighed to himself as he caught the briefest of glimpses.
People these days. Never as sneaky as they liked to think they were.
