The chill in the tower sank right into his bones, creating a dull ache, one that reminded him that he was alive. Miah liked the reminder; it was just another way of getting that rush, that reminder that he was still alive, that this thing hadn’t gotten him yet. It was a rush, though a milder one that he had sought before. Rolling his shoulders, he tried to ignore that ever-present itch under his skin, the voice that whispered at him, seeking a fix. Ignore it. Those two words rang through his mind on such a regular basis that they had almost lost their meaning. Need a distraction. He thought, his gaze drifting over to his companion, eyes taking in the lines of her slender body as she looked out towards the spot they had caught sight of the back of zombie dogs earlier that evening. Don’t. Reaching a hand up, he scrubbed it over his face, distracting himself from his distraction. Things were changing. Miah liked to ignore that voice in the back of his mind, the one that sounded smug and liked to poke holes in his resolve or in the fabric of what made him, him. The voice that would mutter at him when he caught himself watching Ellie too closely, staring for a moment longer than was appropriate. Nothing was changing. Expect everything was. It wasn’t obvious; it was little pieces of a much bigger puzzle, one that only he knew. A look that lingered a heartbeat longer than it should have, a hand placed on her hip instead of her shoulder, A kiss that landed at her temple, but wanted to be elsewhere. Stop. The thought was almost groaned. Focus Standing up, Miah began to pace the guard tower like a caged animal, the appeal of tracking the pack of zombie dogs lost, replaced with thoughts he wasn’t even sure he wanted swirling around his mind. When had things begun to change? When had he begun to fall for his best friend? “Any movement out there, Lo?” Miah stilled in his pacing, unconsciously moving over to stand behind her, hands falling to her shoulders as he looked out in the same direction she was watching. |
