After her yoga with Leah that morning, Rae felt a little bit better. She was still stressed, still bugged a little by the fact that David had outright called her a slut, but he'd since apologized and told her that he'd talked to Silas, the conversation they'd had. She felt both better and worse. If she tried to claim that she hadn't thought about the kiss, she'd have been lying. It had crossed her mind for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the confrontation with David in the cafeteria. For the first couple of days, it had been glares and strange looks, but just as she'd predicted, there was a new drama in the compound that had snatched the attention right away from her alleged sluttiness. She just wished that drama hadn't come at the expense of two of her friends. As they walked in the direction of his boat, Rae could feel the awkwardness looming over them like a dark cloud. She'd hoped that it had just been over text, but it was obvious that she'd been dreaming. Turning her head to look at him, she pulled her lower lip into her mouth and thought carefully before she spoke up again. "Can I ask you a question?" she asked. While it was still awkward, before she tried to dispel it, she wanted to ask him a couple of things. David had told her about what he'd done. Covering for her. Taking the heat for her mistake. And she couldn't imagine that it hadn't had consequences. This place was unforgiving when it came to gossip, because most people didn't have anything better to do anymore. If he'd subjected himself to that, just to keep her reputation from being dragged back through the mud, she didn't know if she'd feel guilty or flattered. Brushing a hand through her hair, she pulled in a breath and asked. Like a band aid. "David told me what you did. Taking the heat for me." A weak smile. "Why'd you do it? None of this was your fault, you know? So... why take the blame?" |
