Smiling when his brother chuckled, Lukas simply shrugged his shoulders in response and relaxed back in to the hard cushions of the bus. "Well as far as I'm concerned, while those things are still walking around out there. Nowhere is really safe. This place seemed like safe enough for a rest stop. And now I've found you so... maybe it'll be more than a rest stop."
His little brother spoke about the losses he'd suffered at the safe house and Lukas could only nod for his part. He hadn't known these people but he knew how easily you could get attached to people you spent every day with, even if they weren't your favourite people in the world. It bothered him on some level that his brother had to suffer more loss and that he couldn't protect him from it, but there were only so many things he could protect him from really. "I hope for you that it never does... the minute it gets easier is the minute we've started losin' our humanity. And that's the only thing separatin' us from those things."
The protests on his brother's part fell on deaf ears. All Lukas was hearing was that his little brother was willingly putting himself out in danger in the middle of those monsters. "Jesus christ... don't tell me that. Seriously. What do you mean it's your job? You're not immune. The government can't force you to do shit. You need to quit. I don't know who put you up to this but you're stoppin' it," he said firmly. His parents might have been dead but someone needed to look after Gabriel. Adult or not.
Suddenly Lukas felt a lot more panicked than he'd ever felt in a situation where he'd found himself overwhelmed by infected. How was it possible to stay perfectly calm in a life threatening situation and then the minute his brother talks about getting near those things he practically has a panic attack. "You haven't been bitten yet. Damn it Gabe... this isn't a game. You might be fast and can shoot a pistol but you're not trained for this shit. Why can't you just leave it to the professionals? People like the immune, people like me... we're trained to protect you."
With a frustrated sigh, Lukas shook his head and looked angrily out the window. "Haven't been here long. Couple weeks... Travelled across the damn country to find you throwin' yourself at infected. What am I supposed to do with that?"
