part 1 of 2 XD
The intranet system had its uses, much as Leah didn't want to admit it. It was a good waste of time, one that she was using quite frequently to keep in contact with her sisters. There was also the fact that people had begun to use it as a way of calling out for help from other safehouses. If it could prevent more people from dying, Leah was in full support of it — though very few people would ever hear her admit it.
When the distress message popped up on one of the computers at the Firehouse, Leah was there to overhear the exchange between the people in charge. It was a two-to-one vote in favor of not risking any more of their people. The Firehouse, being small, had too few immune guarding it, and no one else was brave or stupid enough to go out on their own. Fortunately, the girl who sent out the call for help, had Leah for an audience. Rescue missions weren't generally her thing, but it became a different story when a young person was involved.
Convincing the guard to open the door was her first easily solved problem. All she had to do was feed him a story about someone sending him a message over the computer — some chess game he'd devised with a guard from another safehouse — and he was shouting for one of his buddies to cover for him while he went to respond. Leah took advantage of the changing guard shift to slip out the exit that led to the roof. From there, it was the slightly more difficult matter of getting from the roof of the firehouse to the building on the opposite side of the street, without alerting the horde down below. With backup, she wouldn't have balked at the thought of taking them all on. But she was by herself, and there were simply too many zombies for her to handle.
Choosing an area with mostly shufflers, Leah climbed down from the roof and sprinted across the street, mounting the ladder of the fire escape before much attention was drawn to her. It was a steep climb to the top, but it was worth it. From here she could leap from rooftop to rooftop, hopefully within enough time to reach the trapped teenager before the zombies did. She knew the coordinates; the warehouse wasn't far.
