The creature was finally down, but Evan only relaxed slightly. His heart still hammered in his chest because he knew that with a waker always came a hoard, especially after the waker cried. Staying here for too long wouldn't be safe, but Evan knew that there were things that needed to be done.
First of all, he used his foot to flip the creature onto its back and tugged on the handle of his survival knife, ripping it from the creature's flesh and returning it to its spot in his belt. Second of all, he scanned the immediate area for any flesh eaters who just so happened to be nearby, just in case the immediate danger wasn't over yet. Finally, when the answer to that question turned out to be no, he turned toward the woman and child and walked toward them.
Being a child in this sort of world must have been terrifying. Having so many things around that were bad and evil and not properly being able to defend oneself was among the worst things that Evan could think of. It had been what had stopped he and Olivia from having children, as a matter of fact. The way the child clung to his mother like one would expect a child to cling to their mother in this situation made him feel better about that decision, as much as he'd loved his late wife.
"You're welcome," he started, "I'm just glad I got here when I did."
He looked between the two of them for a moment, then gave the woman an unsure smile. "Are you both okay?" He recognized her, vaguely anyway, as the congressman's wife, but Evan had never been one to pay attention to politics, so he didn't know her name.
