David didn't buy it. There was something in the conversation… Rae looked embarrassed and Elliot looked confused, and maybe if David knew his brother's facial expressions any less than he did, he'd have bought that he hadn't interrupted something. He could tell, though. If Elliot's embarrassment wasn't enough, the fact that Rae refused to look either of them in the eye would have done it. Still, he took Elliot's explanation for what it was, though it was counteracted by Rae's muttered thanks.
She recovered quickly enough, however, to say "Let's celebrate," with a little more genuineness in her voice.
And celebrate they did. David took them to a semi-private area so that they could celebrate in relative peace. It was a quiet corner of a side office in the safehouse, and near a heater that Rae could sit next to and warm up. When they got there and settled in a little bit, out came the booze.
Courvoisier wasn't David's favorite drink… actually, he didn't think that he had a favorite drink, but if he did, it wouldn't be this. Each gulp of the thick tasting liquid made his throat burn and it didn't take long at all before he was drunker than he'd been in ages. Rae was pretty drunk, too. She was laughing at just about everything, and it was almost like the awkwardness that David had obviously walked in on earlier was completely forgotten. Booze was quite the mood equalizer, he supposed.
It had taken convincing from both Elliot and Rae, but David had even performed a rousing rendition of the Men in Tights song for them, much to the chagrin of the few remaining people in the room. By the time he got around to proclaiming that he was "butch," the other people had left and Rae was doubled over in her seat in a helpless fit of pealing laughter.
David was pretty pleased with himself.
Elliot had recalled to him the story of when he and Rae had met, how she'd saved his life and how ironic and coincidental it had been that not only had she saved Elliot, but David too. Maybe it was because he was drunk, but David couldn't help but walk… or crawl, and even that was somewhat stumbly, over to Rae, and hug her from the side. "This girl is awesome!" he proclaimed rather loudly in Rae's ear, a gesture which was met with a surprised gasp and then more laughter. "She's like… a superhero or something! Saved us both!" he said, swaying with Rae, who was still giggling uncontrollably.
"You're hilarious!" she tittered between fits of laughter, leaning into David's hug and hugging him back with one arm. "Elliot, your brother's so funny!"
