Who: Cole and Lou
What: A late night phone call.
When: Early, early Thursday Morning
Where: Cole's Hotel Room and Lou's bedroom.
Rating: Possibly NSFW

As Cole stumbled into his hotel room in the wee hours of the morning, there was one thing that he knew he needed to do. No, make that two. First he really needed to take a piss and second he needed to call Lou. She was still angry with him for some reason, which was so like her. She didn't know how to let go. It wasn't even that big of a deal, all he did was cancel on her. It wasn't as if he'd murdered her uncle or something. She was making this such a big deal when it didn't need to be. But he was willing to forgive her for her overreaction, she was his best friend. And he missed her. She was so far away and it was strange to wake up and not see her all day long. While he was glad he hadn't let her tag along - the last thing he needed was her flirting with all the idiotic frat boys - he wished she was there with him. '

After taking care of his business, he staggered back into his room and fell backward onto his bed, digging in his pockets for his cell phone. After a minute of the slippery phone avoiding his clumsy fingers, he pulled it out and unlocked it, the light nearly blinding his eyes. The time read after two AM, but it seemed the best possible time to call her to him. He looked through his contacts, passing by her name at least twice before finally finding it. Grinning dopily at his success, he pressed dial. The phone rang and when he heard it pick up, he said, "Lou, 'S me. Cole." His words slurring together. "Wha're you doing?"

Since seven o’clock that morning, Lou was on the go from a walk into town with her grandparents to spending the day with her friends to going to see a movie with a boy she’d met earlier in the week. When she wasn’t running along the beach chasing after a soccer ball, she was driving along the coast with five other people crammed into an old school Volkswagen Beatle to all her favorite spots. Even when she was sitting, she was yelling, laughing, and hanging all over the people she’d known since childhood or making out with a guy she barely knew. Her day was long and busy, just the way she liked it.

At three in the morning, she was finally able to fall asleep, quite literally falling onto her bed and barely pulling the covers over herself before she was dead to the world. She knew she was running herself to exhaustion during what should have been a relaxing break, but with silence came thoughts, and with thoughts came the anger. Yes, she knew she was overreacting to the situation with Cole, but until he apologized, she couldn’t stop herself from getting angry with him. Her feelings were hurt and as ridiculous as she knew her thoughts were, she couldn’t stop feeling like Cole was trying to pull away from her, which hurt more than everything else. So, her days were busy and when she finally collapsed each night, she was dead to the world.

...Until the phone rang.

Somehow managing to hear her “Need You Now” ring tone through the haze of sleep, Lou blindly groped for her phone on the bedside table, answering even before she was fully conscious that her phone was in her hand. “...’Lo?” she said, her voice hoarse from sleep. “Cole? ‘M sleepin’.”

Just the sound of her voice made a smile tug at his lips. She was adorable when she was half-asleep. He could imagine exactly how she looked, mussed hair, sleepy eyes and all. His mind started to wander down a less innocent path, but even in his drunken state he knew that was a place he shouldn't go. "Oh, 'M sorry," he stage whispered into the phone. "I did't mean to wake you up." He said. In all truth, he hadn't stopped to think if she would be up or not. He needed to talk to her, and he rather felt she would be more likely to talk to him now than during the day. "Lou," he said, drawing the word out as he stalled. There was something he called to say, but now that she was on the phone he couldn't quite remember what it was. The thought hovered somewhere just out of reach, and he lacked the mental agility to grasp it.

"Lou, Lou, Lou. D'you know that you are my best friend? 'Cause you are." As he spoke, the thought popped into his head that she was still angry with him for some reason. That was probably why he called, it felt right. "You should not be angry with me," he said, over enunciating each word to make extra sure she heard him. "You should be nice to me, I am Cole. Not a person you don't like!" Possibly she'd forgotten who he was? If that was the cause, she'd soon get over her odd fit of anger.

Still more asleep than awake, the words she actually heard were mostly lost when her brain tried to process them. The only thing she caught was her name, his name, and that anger was involved. Was she angry with him? She thought so, but she couldn’t get her mind to work fast enough to figure out what it was about. Some sort of trip? Oh...right. He was in Cancun, while she was in California, a place where he was not. Lou hated being away from him and she always worried about what he’d get up to when she wasn’t there to keep an eye on him. Thus, she was angry with him, but wasn’t there more to it?

Taking a deep breath, Lou slowly exhaled, letting out a little “Mmmm” before she could piece together a somewhat audible reply. “Time is it?” she asked, her head sinking against her shoulder, trapping the phone in between. She could have easily checked her phone or the glowing red letters of the alarm beside her, but both required too much effort and then she’d actually need to open her eyes, which she wasn’t willing to do quite yet. Cole was the one to call her, so he should know.

She expected him to do complex time math when he was drunk as a skunk? That was as likely to happen as he was to join the book club. “Dunno, night time? ‘S dark out,” he replied helpfully. “Y’need to focus,” he said, moving his hands around in time with his words, which moved the phone away from his face. “Hmm, strange. Have you ever looked at your hands, Lou? Really looked? They’re not normal looking.” He said as he inspected the offending hand. “I seem to be having trouble with the moving of them.” Shaking his head slightly so to clear the cobwebs from his addled mind, he flipped over onto his stomach, placing the phone on the bed so it would stay put but forgetting to put it on speaker.

“D’you know that I miss you sooooo much? ‘Cause I miss you so much. Why are you so far away?” He said loudly into the phone, scratching his head absently. “Come to Cancún with Harris and me. Why are you not here?” He said, forgetting it was at his own doing that she wasn’t with him. “‘S havin’ breakfast and y’were not there. M’ food is not so good with you not here.”

Lou grabbed the top of her blanket and pulled it around her shoulders as she curled her knees up to her chest. “Sooooo tired,” she mumbled, wiggling to find a comfortable spot. “Went t’bed at three ‘n soooo tired.” Not willing to let herself fall asleep on the phone (again), Lou struggled to open her eyes and after three tries, she finally managed to open them fully, only to be met with near blackness. Yep, it was definitely dark outside.

Yawning loudly and nearly shutting her eyes again, she brought her head up for a moment to look at the time before snuggling back down. Wait...FOUR IN THE MORNING? “Cole, I’ve only been in bed for an hour!” she grumbled. Did he really call her at what, TWO in the morning his time? What the hell was he thinking? He could have called during the day or even at eleven at night, but why was he waiting until four in the morning to call her? Well...it wasn’t like she’d pick up the phone if he called during the day. How like him to strike when she’s vulnerable. “Cole?” Why wasn’t he answering? “Coooooooooooole...are you there?”

There must be something wrong with his phone, why couldn't he hear her? "Lou? Why're you bein so quiet like a lil' mouse?" he asked into the phone, picking it up at last and noticing he'd forgotten to place it on the speaker phone setting. "Ohhhh, I see." He mumbled to himself, pressing the button that would make it easier to hear. "Can you hear me now?" He asked, the question sending him into a fit of laughter. "Lou, Lou, Lou, like that guy! The one, you know the one!" He said when he was able to speak in between the laughing. "Lou, d'you geddit?" He asked into the phone.

“What?” she asked, her brow furrowed in confusion. Why was he repeating her name so much? Oh, god, he only laughed like that when he was drunk. “Cole, did you drunk dial me again?” What a jackass! He could only call her when he was completely shitfaced and when she was knocked out? Oh well, at least she might get an apology out of him if he was trashed, which she figured he was with the way he was slurring his words together. Plus, he didn’t accidentally call her while having sex with some spring break slut, which had to be a good thing, but just to make sure....

“Why’re you calling me?” He better have a good reason for calling her in the middle of the night when he was incapacitated.

She asked the cutest questions. Cole wrinkled his nose and smiled at the phone fondly. "No, 'M not drunk," he said, shaking his head for emphasis. "I jus' had a few drinks. Calm down, sillyhead. You'r so cute when you get mad, d'you know that?" He decided that lying on his stomach wasn't the best idea he'd had that night, and flipped over onto his back, putting one of his arms behind his head and using the other one to hold the phone to his face. "Jesus, Mary and Joeshep!" He exclaimed loudly when she spoke again and the sound thundered in his ear. "Oh, sorry." He whispered, turning the speaker off again. "'S loud."

Hadn't he told her why he'd called already? He couldn't remember if he done it or if he'd only thought it. "I called," he said, waving his arm around grandly which caused the phone to slip and fall on his face with a smack. "Fuck!" He said, rubbing his now sore nose. "Sorry, 'gin." He said abashedly. "I called," he began again, "'Cause I missed you and I wanna talk to you and hear your pretty voice."

He was definitely drunk. Cole wouldn’t have called her just because he wanted to hear her voice. Sure, he MIGHT miss her a little bit, but not enough to warrant a call at two in the morning, his time. She should just hang up on him right now and go back to bed, but the truth of the matter was that she missed him, too. Now would be the time to talk to him, when he was drunk and vulnerable, not like he had been lately. She didn’t know WHAT was going on with him lately and why he was being such a jerk so talking with him now might be the best chance she’d get to find out why. If she could risk showing her softer side around him.

Sighing, Lou rubbed her eyes and slowly propped herself up against her headboard, bringing her knees to her chest. “I miss you, too, Coley Bear.” She could only hope he’d remember his manners when the morning came and he was no longer drunk. “Why did you plan a trip and didn’t ask me if I wanted to come? Did you just want to have nameless sex with random girls the entire spring break?”

Cole felt a warm feeling flow through him as she called him by the pet name she only used on him when she felt he'd deserved it. "You miss me?" He asked, grinning from ear to eat at the phone. "But y'look like you are havin' so much fun. In the pictures," he clarified. "You don't look like you miss me." He added, his emotions rapidly shifting downward. She looked like she was having the time of her life. HE should be the one who was living it up, not her. And yet he felt like he made the wrong choice about break. He wasn't able to sink too deep into depression, because she was asking him a question and it seemed important.

"No!" He blurted out, surprising himself with the vehemence of his reply. "Well, maybe a little," he added, shrugging his shoulders. "Not th'entire break. No, I am sayin' it wrong." He stopped and took a deep breath, trying to remember what his reasoning had even been. He knew that it was important that she not come, but he couldn't seem to grasp the reason behind it. "I thought you wanted to go home! You were so excited 'bout it. I remem- rememmember- remember? Remember!" He finished, nearly glowing with pride at his ability to get the word out.

That was the problem with Cole; he made it impossible for her to stay mad at him for long. He acted all cute and dumb, causing her anger to nearly vanish. Also, the sneaky bastard called her in the middle of the night so she couldn’t be so angry with him due to lack of sleep. “Well, of course I miss you. Seeing my mundie friends is great and we always have fun, but you and Harris are still my best friends. I’m used to seeing you guys every day and being away is just weird.” Especially since they hadn’t been talking or emailing every day, like usual.

“You rememmembered right,” she began, openly mocking him with a smile. “But you were still supposed to come with me. I can go home at anytime, but how often do I get to go home with my best friend in tow? It would have been a totally different trip.”
