Viridescence [userpic]
Enhance userpic organization and edit capabilities.

For those of us who have a lot of userpics, the current edit userpics page is very cumbersome. I have the Insane Userpics, with over 1600 userpics uploaded, and I have problems loading the page to edit keywords or comments. Part of this seems to be a bug that is currently being worked on, but part of it is that the edit userpic interface is simply inadequate for handling more than a hundred or so icons (I have similar problems with an account that only has the permanent extra userpics [500]).

What I suggest (and I have no idea how feasible it is, but here it is anyway) is this:

We need a better way to organize and edit userpics. Set it up so that we can create userpic categories, or create an icon tagging system, similar to what we have already for our entries. Allow us to make modifications within one category/tag group at a time, or at the very least, allow us to work with a subset of all of the icons so we don't have to wait for all of the icons to load. For example, I may want to make changes to the keywords within my group of Drew Barrymore icons, and I don't want to have to work around all of my OTHER icons at the same time. Or if I've just uploaded a bunch of icons with my uploader program, I want to go through and tag/categorize them, without having to wait for the page to load up all of my other icons when I only want to work with these several dozen. Allow us to delete, edit, re-tag/categorize multiple icons en masse. This would be SO very helpful, and would make it so much easier to work with large numbers of icons.

And while I'm on this train of thought, what would people think of the idea of allowing us to designate certain userpics as friends-only, custom friends groups, private, or public? It seems like it might be an interesting idea at first glance, but how would it work, and would people even be interested in it?

I already adore IJ, but if we could have a better way to categorize/tag and work with our userpics, I would be THRILLED, and it would definitely give IJ another major advantage over other journaling sites.

Two Cents

I rarely have problems with the edit icon page when it comes to the page itself loading. I do not have thousands of icons of course but I have my fair share. With that said I personally have problems with the uploading itself, which is a whole other issue. What I am attempting to get at is that I can't talk about the first part so much.

As for the second I disagree. I see no good reason for people to need designated friends only/private/custom/etc icons. The only reason I can see is that some icons are not so pubic savvy (ie: adult) but IJ already generally falls under the way of thinking: as long as it isn't your default icon, we're okay with the adult stuff (as long as it isn't illegal). Unless I am wrong about that of course, but I don't believe I am.

All of that seems like more work that would only take up more server space to me. Sure the categories would be interesting but the practice sounds like it would be a nightmare to use.

Re: Two Cents

No, you're not wrong about adult icons. At first, I thought the friends-only icons might be an interesting idea, but I don't see how it could be implemented very well, and it might be more trouble than it's worth. So maybe that's not such a brilliant idea upon second glance.

But the tagging/categorization idea, I think it would be very helpful, particularly for people who have more than 300 icons. Perhaps it could be something that people have the choice to use--like you could choose to have the advanced categorization or the current setup, depending on how many icons you have and how much work you want to put into them. Or it could be a feature that is made available only for those people who have paid for permanent extra userpics or insane userpics.

Two Cents plus a penny.

If it were possible to make, opt-in would probably be the best way to go about it you are right, or even for insane userpic buyers because the 300 marks isn't all that much in comparison.

This sounds like it could be very useful!
