Comment rot
Hi! I hope this is the right place for this.

I know you're aware of the issue of comments disappearing from entries randomly, but I just wanted to add my voice to raising that issue once again. It's happened to me several times in the past two weeks. I know this issue is keeping several people I know, who are otherwise desperate to leave Livejournal, from permanently setting up camp over here. Comment interaction on my posts is the single most important journalling issue for me, and I think other fandom folks feel the same (if not non-fandom IJ'ers as well).

If there would be any possible way to speed up the code update for that, I would be very grateful. I am otherwise very pleased with this site and want to stay here, but this is a major obstacle to that. :(

Thank you!

Seconded. I've lost over 300 comments so far and have decided not to post in my own IJ anymore until the problem is fixed.

I agree, I've had some of my most important RP scene comments disappear and I am/was heartbroken. I've taken to saving through LJ-Archive as regularly as possible in hopes to have them. Does anyone know if they will be recovered when the update goes through, or are they gone permanently?

Oh, yes! I don't RP and so hadn't thought of that, but comments really are where most of the scene-writing happen in RPs, aren't they? That really is a very big deal, for those comments to disappear. :(

For me they are. Some people play on AIM but I just don't have the time to sit there on AIM so I thread scenes instead. :[

There is something you can do to help, actually. If you are or know of or can lay hands on at five removes another CSS designer and maybe some people who knows Javascript or Perl, and convince them that volunteering their labor to get the update shipshape is just what they want to do... then we may get somewhere faster.

The problem is that IJ runs completely on (very few) volunteers and everyone has day jobs. With the influx of new users there must be some people around here with the skills to help, but they aren't coming forward much. If you could help put the word around that help is needed, and we can get more hands working, maybe we can make more progress.

i know perl, but right now my time is unfortunately very limitted. if there was a to-do list with how much time each was estimated to take that volunteers could pick from, I'd keep my eye on it and volunteer as time permitted.

*nods* I'll ask Squeaky about putting a list up somewhere handy.

Something like this, perhaps?

Definitely a good idea. *nods*

Yeah, and I do think that the support board format might be suitable for this. I'm not sure how much work it would take to re-do a version of it for this purpose, but if we're lucky it may not be too much.

Thank you, that's a great idea. I myself have zero tech knowledge, but I wonder if a wider call was put out, if other IJ'ers just might respond to help the site out. I know most of the folks in my fandom, at least, really appreciate that IJ is run on the love of volunteers rather than a big corporation.

I'll try to spread the word. :)

My Perl is rusty but serviceable, and my javascript is good. But like [info]alchemia, I have limited time, so I'd really appreciate seeing a todo list with estimated time per item. I'd love to help out with IJ, and knowing how much time I could expect to spend on it would help me put it into my schedule.

*nodnod* I'll definitely talk to Squeaky about at least setting up an asylum, to start with, then. The first project might be getting a copy of the Support Board working for To Do items!
