I'd like to suggest that someone (not necessarily Squeaky since he has a buttload of other things to do) organize an S2 style contest (ala this one).

I also think it would be cool to go through some of those submissions and find out which ones are up for grabs by their creators. LJ didn't incorporate all of them, so if nothing else the rejects should be free for stealing. I'm of the opinion that anything LJ doesn't want must have unforeseen and great value.

My understanding is that LJ owns the copyright for the layouts for this contest. The thing is with contests you frequently cede ownership of copyright at the time of submission, not when it's incorporated. So they may own all of these submissions. You would need to look at the actual submission form/paperwork to see. My only concern with stealing these from LJ, just like hacking the styles LJ implemented, is that if it violates LJ's copyright, the user's put

squeaky in the middle. As the owner of the site, he'd be the one dealing with DCMA claims from the Evil Empire. I don't want to screw IJ in the process of screwing LJ. I want to put that out there because I don't think people realize it.

I think a contest is a fabulous idea, maybe through a community like

I would have thought the same thing, but I've seen certain layouts (that were ultimately rejected by LJ) on other sites. I certainly wouldn't suggest sneaking in there and just yanking them off the site... but since each of the creators is listed, it wouldn't hurt to contact them about the layouts, or, ultimately, LJ.

That seems as good a place as any :) There are some brilliant S2ers out there
