Texture Tutorial by JE
I never noticed that I hadn't posted this tutorial here...
I made first at severalplums' texture challenge and this is my tutorial for it. I think I made this originally in PS CS3 (using PS7 to compare with my notes and make the pictures used in this tutorial) using primarily filters.
Warning: This tutorial is image heavy!
Texture Tutorial
Going from to
Note: Unless otherwise stated, layers are set at 100% Note2: This was the first time I did textures, so I simply tried one filter after another. Most of the time I tried filters with different values until I liked it.
Step 1: I copied the background (original) layer and set the new layer (1) to Overlay before using the Radial Blur. I used the following settings: Strength - 70 Method - spin Quality - good
to
Step 2: I copied the background again and set the new layer (2) to Screen. This time I used the filter Crystallize with the value 10.
to
Step 3: Once again, I copied the background to create another layer (3) blending it as Linear Light. I used the Patchwork filter with the following values: squaresize: 8 relief: 21
to
Step 4: At this point I saved the file with a slight extension to the name (so I would know where it belonged to) before merging the layers. I tend to do this before merging in case I want to redo something or forgot how I got the result. For this I used the key-combination Ctrl+Shift+e.
The layers before the merge:
I merged the layers because I wanted the following effects to work on the combined picture and not just one of the individual layers.
Step 5: Now I used the filter Polar Coordinates going from square to polar on the merged layer
to
Step 6: Once again I used the Radial Blur, leaving the values from before (70, good) while switching from spin to zoom.
to
Step 7: I liked the result of the last step already, but thought it wasn't smooth enough so I did a Gaussian Blur at 8,0 to get a nicer result:
to
Step 8: Now I went wild with cropping 100x100 pieces out of it by setting the cropping tool to 100x100 and picking various spots in various original sizes... I ended up with 31 textures out of which I picked the 8 I liked best.
