BloMo7: Snoozy Saturday TV and Beyond....

Saturday is a TV wasteland. It's pathetic, how the networks have basically abandoned the night to reruns of stuff we watched during the week. Luckily, there's still off-network syndication and the TiVO....

Legend of Seeker
Remember Xena and Hercules? Well, this show is from the same team, only it's 9 years later, they have more money and they're taking the story-telling much more seriously (probably because Terry Goodkind is still alive to kick their asses if they mess up his Sword of Truth book series too much). Oh, don't get me wrong, there's still a layer of fine fromage over the proceedings, but the show is definitely more exciting and dangerous than its roots. The SO and I love it, and we try to get it on Saturday (syndication means we can get it Sat. or Sun.) because the day is so empty.

Saturday Night Live
I've been watching since I was a kid. Why stop now?

Dollhouse
Usually, we watch this on Saturday. It's a Joss Whedon show, which means, 1. It won't be on much longer and 2. It's smart and slick and above the average TV viewer's head. I won't even ask you to watch it, even though it rocks, because you'd just be letting yourself in for heartbreak. But if you have a huge jones to watch a show where people's memories are stored away in order to allow new memories to be reprogrammed into them over and over again, allowing them to be anyone or have any skill, then go ahead, tune in. I dare you. ~_^

Dr Who
New special next week! Maybe it's sad, but I could never get into the series until they updated it. I guess I can only stand modern cheesy production values.

Being Human
A vampire, a werewolf and a ghost rent an apartment together...and what follows for all of 6 episodes is much more than the punchline to a joke. There's a second season we're looking forward to from the BBC, and SciFi is going to do an American version next year. We'll see how that goes when the time comes....

Merlin
Yes, we watch it. It's fun. But I have a heck of a time making myself watch it. We tend to go in spurts. It's probably because it's damn hard watching Anthony Stewart Head play a character that's anti-magic. ~_^

True Blood
...cannot get back on the air fast enough. The show is silly, illogical and even stupid at times, but the SO and I can't get enough of muttering "Sookie" at it.

How I Met Your Mother
This is another show I didn't get into until after the first season, but that should tell you how charming and engaging all the characters are, that I picked it up in later seasons.

House/Lie to Me
or, Shows With Fascinating Leading Men. I picked up House in season 4. Huge Laurie, once he caught my eye, was mesmerizing. Plus, I think I'm the only person alive that likes 13. Lie to me is MUCH better this season than last. The show is about Tim Roth's character, and that's where it should stay focused.

Chuck/Lost
COME BACK, SHOWS, COME BACK! I don't disagree that maybe network television would benefit from BBC-like shorter seasons and constantly new material, but it still sucks having to wait almost a year to see shows I adore again.

Ok, anything I'm forgetting, I'll pick up tomorrow.

People were married today and we got to watch live, via satellite on the internet. There were a lot of tears, so if you experienced any network outages today, it's probably because a few key wires were rusted in the process. ~_^ Anyway, it was sweet and a little disturbing (did those people in the back row wander in??), but overall, an interesting experience. Good luck to the shappy couple!

the dayweekmonth has flown by

I think I had about a day to breathe after getting back from con, but that's being generous. Finished up part two of the big design gig I've been working on, and have been catching up and refining my class projects. Today I worked opening shift for the first time in about a month and it was ridiculously busy, but that just meant I hardly felt the hours go by.

So, I've been playing a bit over on IJ's [info]porn_battle. The drabble tally, so far:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Stryker/Victor, always about Logan

Baccano!, Fermet/Czeslaw, the mental torture is worse than the physical

Commercials, Mr. Clean/Scrubbing Bubbles scrubbers, raw

Batman: The Dark Knight, Batman/Jim Gordon, night visitor

On a completely different note, anyone who works, lives, or has ties to Oakland and who are interested in community news/blogging/local journalism and activism, OaklandLocal is hosting a meetup on Nov 16th downtown. There are some very inspired folks with great ideas involved in the site, so if you've got any inclination, please consider checking it out!

Otaku Fest 2009 (1/3)

Oh yes. It's PICSPAM TIME!!! Some of you might remember my picspam of last year's Otaku Fest. Obviously I went again, and man this year it was more varied. Of course the NARUTO fandom was there, but my second favourite anime fandom also made an significant enough appearance. Yes, I am talking about HETALIA. And finally, my first MAIN ANIME FANDOM was there, yes, DRAGON BALL fandom appeared too. The reason? The dub actors of Goku and Vegeta were there, and all Peruvian otaku went nuts. Because as much as you love other fandoms, EVERYBODY loves DRAGON BALL. Why not? It is a freaking clasic? XD

Anyway, without further ado: THE PICSPAM!!!!
PS: As always you are welcome to correct me if I make a mistake in the NAME THAT ANIME CHARACTER game AND you can also participate because I am not otaku enough to know the name of every single one of them (or even their fandoms :P)

Yeah, we start with the merchandising >__>

See all the cool stuff I didn't buy because I am poor? :P

Ok fine! Here be COSPLAYERS!!!! )
YEAH DANCE BITCHES DANCE!!! Man, it was hilarious watching Majinboo and Mr. Piccolo doing a weird "tough fighter" dance (curiously what you could heard in those moments was Caramelldansen)

That's it for now. Come back tomorrow and, hopefully, I'll have the next part of this ready :P

BloMo6: Friday night is Wonky TV night!....

It's like...if you stay home on a Friday night, you must have eclectic tastes. Right? It's certainly not Loser TV for Losers, nooooo. ~_^

(I am kidding, really!)

Ghost Whisperer
I didn't watch the early seasons of this show, trying to tell myself I wasn't interested, but I have a hard time resisting supernatural anything. I mean, I watched Charmed for a few seasons, for gawd's sake! Plus, I have to admit, Jennifer Love-Hewitt is awfully...Lush. It's actually not a bad little show. Usually, the ghost is put to rest at the end of the episode, and any mytharc the series flirts with fits into the regular episode. Ok, the husband's not bad either.

Ugly Betty
Bright, colourful, wacky, fun! I'm a little sad that more people don't watch Ugly Betty. I love the entire cast; I can't think of one character I don't adore. *clings to it*

Medium
This show is smart, the family and characters are real, and NBC is staffed by fools. The End.

Monk
The first half of this last season, the show was cruising hard. The cases were almost nonexistent, and the "bits" were tired. But now that we're into the second half, it's like a light went on and the people involved realised that they only have a few episodes left to say goodbye to one of TV's most original characters. If you watch The Mentalist or Numbers, you have Mr. Monk to thank.

Psych
Oh. How. I. Love. This. Show. Shawn and Gus are a great team, and I love the premise, of a man so observant that people wouldn't listen to him until he began doing his psychic schtick. It's funny, it's fun, it's smart. I actually like Corbin Bersen for once. If you have no idea what Psych is about, then ask me more, because this is a show you should be watching.

White Collar
Jury's still out on this one. The SO likes it, but I have a hard time cheering for criminals.

Sanctuary & Stargate BSGUniverse
Um, we have bazillion episodes sitting on the TiVO. Does not bode well. The first episode of Stargate Universe was a huge downer, and people keep telling us it finds sub-levels from there.

So, who's home with me? ^_^

evening out

This evening the lovely [info]alisanne was in town, so we met up for dinner and tea and much chatter of fandom and other topics.  It was quite a nice time.
Now I must prepare for my weekend adventure in Austin, plus try to make some progress on my art coming due.

Dance of joy, dance of joy...

I just thought you should all like to know that yesterday was a very, very important day for me.

One of the hallmarks of hypo-thyroidism is... puffy fingers or swollen hands. Because of this latest bought of adventure on the Thyroid Seas, I have not been able to wear my wedding band for about three years or so. In fact, I've been wearing my paternal grandmother's ring for about a year now, so that I didn't feel "unmarried." However, yesterday, on a whim, I picked up my wedding band and slipped it on and you can see the result here...

The Return of My Wedding Band

I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am!! And I'm still wearing it! The Husbandly One congratulated me and said that perhaps the current dosage of thyroid hormone is working for me. I think he may be right! We'll see if the endocrinologist agrees in two weeks!

*dances off, ridiculously happy*

ultimate edition films

A while back I pre-ordered the Blu-ray versions of the "Ultimate Edition" or whatever they're calling it of Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets. In the process of proving last night that the thing in the Fry's ad which showed a set of all five films on Blu-ray was not this edition, but just a boxed set of the films, I noticed that the "Ultimate Edition" is also available on DVD for about ten bucks cheaper.

I thought well, there must be something extra on the Blu-ray version, or maybe I didn't know I had a choice. I looked at both pages on Amazon, though, and aside from the fact that the Blu-ray crams both the theatrical and extended cuts on a single disc whereas that takes up two discs in the regular DVD version (3 discs and 4 discs total, respectively), I couldn't see any difference.

The television that is hooked up to our Blu-ray player (read: our PS3) is, um, kind of the opposite of HD, so while we can watch Blu-ray discs we don't get to see any of the actual benefit of buying in that format. So unless there's something different about the content, there's really no reason for me to pay the extra money.

Can someone reality check me here, and make sure there's not something I'm missing? Because if not, I think I'll cancel the Blu-ray order and go for DVD instead.

from a recent post by Wil Wheaton:

I've been struggling lately to turn a lot of ideas I have into actual stories. I kind of feel like my writing mojo has taken a temporary leave of absence, and the harder I look for it, the harder it is to find. It has been incredibly frustrating.

This morning, in Warren Ellis' BAD SIGNAL e-mail, he said:
At least half of all writing involves just sitting and staring into space. Letting your brain out to hunt down ideas, bringing them back all warm and bloody between its teeth.
This is something that I knew to be true, but had temporarily forgotten. As writers, it's vital that we meet our deadlines, of course, but we also have to build time into our work schedule to read books, take walks, visit doctor whisky, play with our dogs, and do the other things that may not look or feel like work, but are integral to our creative process.

The image of one's brain as a cat or hunting hound bringing back warm, bloody game was amusing. Also, IHNJ, IJLS "doctor whisky". lol.

Les Misérables 5 (Final Post)

Cut for spoilers! )

[info]the_minx_17

So... about yesterday.

As some of you know, yesterday included a trip to the vampires and some of the usual testing. So, yeah, that tires me out anyway. But then, one of my closest friends called upset and in tears.

Let me say, cancer sucks.

Five years ago, she had to have a hysterectomy because of cancer. This past summer she finally hit her 5-year clear mark. Then yesterday she found out she has breast cancer.

Talk about a slap in the face. *sighs*

So, anyway. My mood still sucks. I can hold onto pissiness like nobody else. But, for Michi, I'm trying to let it go and be upbeat and what have you. We'll see how that works out.

Thanks for the emails. I didn't respond to them all, as some of you told me not to and for once I listened. But they did mean a lot. So, yeah, thanks for that.

In other news

Apparently I'm not the only one having Large Hadron Colllider continuity headaches. The CERN team themselves are having them!

Of course, we know the real problem is aliens trying to get through and bloody Torchwood keeps shutting the thing down by "reversing the polarity," though at least not of a neutron flow.

Really. Pharm exam. Now.

Snagged from half my flist

Funny. I would've expected the "dork" rating to be about the same as the other two, given my perceptions about my own social ineptitude (look, I even have a tag for it!), though apparently this test doesn't care so long as all are above 50% for this result.

Your result for The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test...

Outcast Genius

83 % Nerd, 87% Geek, 52% Dork

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.

A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.

A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in all three, earning you the title of: Outcast Genius.

Cut for lengthy analysis and links )

In related news, I let myself get talked into going to a party tonight for my coworker's son's 40th birthday. The one other coworker that I knew was going to go has now hurt her back and may not be going. Me in a room full of people I don't know other than the guest of honor's mother is probably not a great scenario. Especially since I'm still working at midnight and can't really be drinking. There should at least be dancing, but again, if I don't know anyone, not likely to be doing much of that.

Meanwhile, I'd best get cracking on my pharm exam, considering I've only got until midnight to log in and get it done. I hear from those who've already taken it that it's tougher than the last one. Considering that one was a bloody cake walk, I suppose that's not saying much, but apparently most of the questions and their answers aren't to be found in the first sentence or two of any given appropriately-headed section of the book this time. *shrugs* I thought that first one was a bit of a gimme for an open-book test. Considering my level of apathy over grades this semester, it's no surprise I'm not terribly worried. Except, possibly, about the apathy itself, which should probably take down my "nerd" rating a few notches, but oh well.
