Petunia Dursley at 4 Privet Drive with Harry's Wand
Title: Confiscation (Harry's in the cupboard again)
Artist: [info]ships_harry
Character: Petunia Dursley
Location: 4 Privet Drive
Object: Harry's wand
Other Characters: Harry, sort of
Rating: R-ish
Warnings: None sexual, although there is a boy locked in a cupboard
Art Details: So I played around with styles, and I imagine this'll make me unrecognisable to the couple of people who seem to guess me :). Mainly photoshop, a bit of open canvas.
Disclaimer: Not my characters - Petunia Dursley, Harry Potter and Number 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging belong to JK Rowling.
Artist's Notes: Loads of hard chalk brushes, a limited palette, and deciding to remove all the guide-lines without putting all the detail back in. Fun, actually :).

I love the limited palette which gives it sort of a dream-like look, and I *especially* like that you made Petunia actually look attractive. With that dress and her hair, she reminds me of one of those 1960s "cocktail hour" housewives; just a bit "Mrs. Robinson".

Poor Harry. Makes you wonder if that would show up on a Priori Incantatem. :-D

Argh, yikes... maybe that would be a way to take out Voldemort? The Priori Incantatem is done and he's enveloped by a disembodied vagina?

Hell yes! What a character! I don't think I've ever seen NWS Petunia art before. Yay!

The style of this is gorgeous.

I didn't see the hand until people mentioned it.

Is this AU, then? Harry had his own room before having a wand.

Maybe it's just a fantasy of hers? lol!

Thanks! I'm replying to this bit rather than your previous comment (and yay, such a nice one!) to answer the question - it's not AU :). Harry's been locked away as punishment, and his wand taken. He's young, and can't do magic outside school, and is therefore unprotected and vulnerable. His supposed caregiver has taken away the one potential equaliser, and he's trapped - she can do whatever she wants :). It's more symbolic abuse of power than anything in-character :).

OH YES! Tsk, tsk, I wonder what's going on in her noggin--on the stairs, Harry just beneath, and with his wand to boot?! Naughty Tooney!

I love the sepia effect, the graininess. Wonderful use of your prompts. Well done!

This is just STRIKING. I love the colors and the way it all just seems to gush out... guh. Love it, even if it is Petunia.

Hee, thanks! That's awesome :D. I very much like how you describe it as gushing out - once the lines were gone, it had such a loose feel to it that I had to leave it like that :).

Heh, using Lily's wand would be a very different story! I wonder, in that case, if we'd be looking at the wand-as-phallus for an incest fantasy, or the wand as the source of the thing that took her sister away, and it's more of a kind of revenge/defilement of the object?

As it is, it's definitely Harry's wand - power imbalance, abuse of power and all that :).

I agree with nehalenia on the Sepia Colouring. It does give it a dream like quality. Harry's hand coming out of the cupboard underneath the stairs is brilliant. Very kinky.

*giggles helplessly* I can't get the image [info]nehaliena left out of my head now. I can just see the soul of Voldie popping out of the end of Harry's wand followed by a dark, damp place... Oh, God, sorry about that.

Your art is fabulous! I love your style and the sort of highlighty bits on Petunia's face and the necklace. Really gorgeous.

Naw, I think it's more that Petunia's vagina will pop out the end of the wand and envelop Voldemort...

Imagine that one for the crowds at Hogwarts!

Thank you!

I really love this piece, and I don't think I can adequately put into words precisely why that is. I think it's a combination of the colors, the way you've portrayed Petunia (so long and lean; very canon yet not wholly unattractive in her own way), and the inherent wrongness of it all. It also makes me wonder about the story behind it, and what would prompt Petunia to, er, abuse a wand in such a fashion.

inherent wrongness

Yes, absolutely! I've been thinking of this as a kind of power imbalance situation - a young Harry with his only potential equaliser taken away, and then Petunia using it purely for pleasure while he's locked up and deprived. I've also decided this has a lot less to do with character and more to do with symbolism ;).

Ooooh! I love this. The style's very different and I love the use of sepia tone too. It's got a really sketchy, frantic feel to it -- and yay, you made Petunia fair haired which I believe *is* canon! What a dirty girl she is! Excellent!

Yay, yes, blonde Petunia *is* canon! I love how you describe it as "sketchy, frantic" because once the original lines were gone, it went from rather wooden to far more loose and fluid, and I liked that so much more for this picture :). Thank you!

I love this look (not an artist, and have no idea the correct terminology to use), but this is different, and awesomely done. I like the colors (and lack of color giving everything the greenish tone). I particularly love the hallway to the kitchen and the hint of portraits on the wall. Awesome.

another treasure I missed in all the excitement!

this has a beautiful mood, and is really nice use of filters. so often they can be just gimmicky and look like an afterthought.

I'd love to chat PS techie talk with you!

and, that NAUGHTY Petunia!!!

Thank you!

Let's see what I can remember about the filters... I know that the top texture is just the texturiser canvas option, once the whole image had been flattened.

My favourite bit of texture in this is from a coloured layer - I used a mixture of desaturated greens, yellows and oranges, in a messy sort of layer that was supposed to look a bit filthy. I have an "ink splatter" brush set that I downloaded from Ivy Photography's Deviant Art page (I can see if I can find a link if you're interested), and I used a lot of the more vertical splats to build up the shapes.

I *think* I set that to Overlay, but I'm afraid I can't quite remember... most of the image was drawn underneath it with that top layer set as invisible so it wouldn't affect the colours that the eyedropper picked up, but right there so that I could keep checking to see how it was looking. The sharp highlights were drawn over the top.

It's possible I may have duplicated the overlay layer, too, because just one might not have been intense enough. If it wasn't overlay, it would have been soft or hard light.

Like a twit, I flattened the psd file and saved so I can't go back and check :-/.

wow, thanks for all the details. Yeah, those adjustment layers can be so incredibly subtleo r powerful or both. but I am very anal about saving my master files and stepping them down for posting.

I know just enought to go play with this and see what's possible. I never would have guessed it was your work, though!
